Why does my internet think I'm in Australia?

I agree with what a few other posters have said. If it's just happening on Chrome it suggests that a Chrome extension is proxying your connection via Australia. Incognito mode seems to disable extensions which would be why it then displays correctly.

The main concern I'd have is that if the unexpected external IP appears only at the application layer i.e. in chrome but not ie there is a potential exploit on that browser. As said incognito is likely to disable extensions to chrome so that would be my first port of call. Secondly I'd avoid banking sites/shopping until you work out the root cause.

I agree that an extension not allowed in Incognito mode sounds likely, or else funky proxy/dns settings. Go to Whoer and see whether it gives your Sky IP or another, and what DNS settings it's showing. It will also give you the hostname for your IP, so it should be easy to see whether it's something.sky.com or proxy.something-else.net.

Do a search in Google and at the bottom of the first page there's a link that should say "use precise location. Click on it and see what options you've got. It should also say where it thinks you are in general.

Just disable all your chrome extensions if you're not sure which one it is.

No good. I'll put it down as being routed through a US proxy.

Using a "where am I" website, it comes as the White House :D

Ok thanks all, much appreciated :)

I think I'm going to just format the PC. It's seriously overdue so this may as well use this as an excuse to get it done.

Time for some Aussie Netflix?

hahaha.... it's one of the worst Netflix regions out there. US is by far the best, followed by some European nations, of which, UK is the leader ofc.

About the OP, if you're already connected to a VPN, and the new, assigned IP happens to be Australian, then no wonder it's coming up with everything Australian. If not, you might have too Google what a VPN is and use an IP that actually is from your region. For Google's local results to work better, you'll even have to specify the city too.
