Why does my new 6.5" sub have two sets of connectors instead of one?

As the title really, my new Dual 4ohm Elemental Designs 6.5" subs have just arrived and they've got 2 sets of connectors going to them. Does this mean both sides have to be connected for the speaker to work? Or is it simply to keep the wires tidy allowing you to connect them to either side?

If that is the case, what does that mean with regard to amplifying them, will they just be connected as usual but with four wires from each channel instead of two?

It has those on both sides (12 oclock and 6 oclock)

That shows it better.

Ah fantastic, thanks for that mate.

So does anybody have any amp recommendations?
Is there any advantage over a mono, two or four channel amp to run these two subs?

Ahhh, you got some then :)

I'm looking at rear subs for my parcel shelf. Be good to hear how you get on with these Adam.

I've got a JBL 600.1 monoblock in my car, you really want an amp that can do 2 ohm stable with the sub having dual 4 ohm voice coils.

I'll certainly let you know how they are once I figure out what amp I need to power them!

Here's where my head is at now:

I have 2x Dual 4Ohm, 250watt (each) subs.

That means the amplifier I get must be able to provide two channels of 250watt @ 4Ohms?

Looking online, I don't seem to be able to find any that can deliver that wattage for anything other than silly money.

Even the £200 Harmon Kardon will do: RMS Power @ 4Ohms : 2 x 110W

Am I barking totally up the wrong tree here, or do these tiny subs require a LOT of power?

they dont require that power, no. and depending how they are mounted (ie; sealed box, ported or free-air) then you might not even need 1/2 of that 250w rms before you are pushing them to their limits.

However yes, in general, smaller subs need a lot more power to provide the same output as larger subs. especially at the bottom end of the frequency range. it would have bene a far better choice to go for bigger subs (even one of them) if you had the space to do so.

Unfortunately a bigger sub isn't an option as they are going in an MR2.
They will be mounted in 7l sealed boxes and because the cabin of the car is so small I think these two will be quite sufficient.

Does anybody have any reccomendations of amps that would power these well in the £100-150 price bracket?

Ah just seen you have two subs?
So you would really need two of those amps... Or you could find an amp that was 1 ohm stable and wire all the voice coils from both subs into it. Ideally you give a sub as much power as it can take, but in reality, for most installs that amount of power is going to be overkill. If you get an amp that is 500W RMS into 1 Ohm I'm sure you'll be very happy with the results. :)

This will do the trick

well, as he's using two DVC subs, he can wire for either 1,2 or 4 ohm. i should think wiring for 2 ohm would give him plenty of power from that amp and it would be a little kinder to it as well. 1ohm isnt an easy load to drive and if he doesnt need to there's little point :)

How can he wire 2 x DVC 4 ohm subs into a single 2 ohm load? Am I being stupid? :o

Don't really think there's an issue using a 1 ohm load as long as the amp is rated for it though...

That's too much over budget really, as i'll be getting front components plus another amp to power them - I don't really want to be spending £500 on an install.

Theres a lot more to an amp than power mate.

but you need either a 2x4ohm stable amp

a 4 channel amp or a 4 channel bridgable amp

or a monoblock which you wire up to sub in 2 or 8 ohm loads.

I suggest a genesis dual mono / miniblock

Any other suggestions on amps that fit in to my budget and will drive these two subs? I'm seriously struggling to find one and this cash is burning a hole in my pocket!
