Why does no one play the same game anymore?

I miss the days of Halo 2 (Can substitute it with goldeneye or SMK... whatever) when there were always at least 8 people floating around from here (or where I lived) to play with. Everyone seems to have abandoned playing the same game and now play many games for very brief periods of time.

Take the FPS genre for example where everyone used to play TS2, Goldeneye or Halo 2 during different generations. Now we have, in one generation:

Halo 3: A select few people play it, I guess it lacks soul.
GRAW: Plenty of people played it but it was really short lived, not sure why.
Gears: Maybe the party size is too small and a really dull/glitchy game.
CoD4: Only complete retards seem to play this online in all game modes so it's boring to play, especially as a team. This one seems obvious I suppose as a game needs to be challenging to maintain interest.
RB6: Had potential but never took off, maybe the graphics?
UT3: Crap game all around
BFBC: Not popular at all
Resistance/Warhawk: PSN/PS3 is generally anti-social but great to play on your own

There doesn't seem to be a pattern except for a lot of choice.

Anyone else miss the Halo 2 (Or Goldeneye, whatever) days (even though I only caught the tail end of it) where everyone played the same game regularly rather than playing many multiplayer games briefly and in tiny little groups? I suppose this is what I expected Halo 3 to be as it was the people who played it that made Halo 2 so fun to play but even at uni, where everyone I knew played Halo 2, no one seems to play the same game.

Is it because of this generation of consoles? I'm inclined to say no because the brawl scene is pretty big around here with plenty of tournaments and players but everyone is crap at that :(

I'm not sure where this post is going as I never normally make long posts but to summarise:

tl;dr version:

Why does no one play the same multiplayer games anymore? Is it too much choice, a generally unpopular generation of consoles, "been there done that", bad games in general or too much focus on graphics?

I agree with what you have said. I think that too much choice is available or something to that effect.
This generation a lot of people like to be playing the newest and best thing. If you buy a game the week it comes out, up to about a month, the servers are packed and its easy to get a game, then everything dies down, especially if a new game has been released.

The only way I have managed to continue playing R6V (later upgraded to R6V2) is because I have a group of friends who enjoy that game and therefore we get games of about 4 - 8 people.

I use to really enjoy GoW but was never that great at it. If you go online now it is only really hardcore people that play it and there are about 6 matches going.

I guess my opinion is that there is too much "Oooo shiny" for new games.

Id never go back to Halo 2 (mainly because I traded it in) But I'm always up for some Halo 3 games. Now I have CoD 4 I'd love to get some games going in that as up to now I've only been playing on my own.

People get bored? A game is a game, it will hold your interest for a certain time then people will just leave it. I'll play a game a lot for a while then i wont go back to it for months or even years. Currently I'm playing Bad Company, and when im bored i'll move on

You miss the point I'm making.

People used to play the same game for a long time, so what has changed that makes them bored of games quicker than the previous generation of games?

Some interesting points Fortyseven. I thought it may have been too much choice but then we've always had choice. Do you think games are more "average" now with fewer shining examples (for example GoldenEye was an amazing game amongst a myriad of poor FPS attemps) or are all games now "good" (do we have a lot of GoldenEye quality games?)?

I play Bad company, but I do miss the days of friends coming over and playing 4-16 player Halo for about 2 years straight.

Spilling coke on my bedroom carpet, swapping teams during game countdown (so annoying trying to organise 16 people) and also pistol head shot arguements. Warthog wars were also fun times and nobody got bored! (400% health, all rockets, blood gultch and everyone in the Warthogs)

If you want a mono-culture of gaming, go play World of Warcraft.

Again, you're missing the point completely. I'm asking what has changed and why pretty much no one plays the same games anymore for any length of time. Don't jump to the daft conclusion that I'm demanding everyone plays the same game for 7 years =/

I do miss the multiplayer sessions of 4 players all around one console ala my N64 and I don't think the online experience will ever replace that.

These days I tend not to play that much online because I'm just not as good as 12 year old Tommy who sits there all day playing the game. I don't like to lose :(

too many half baked games to choose from.

if there was any reason, it would be that. still, thats a little hypocritical of me considering counter strike source is my most played game lol.

I still play COD4 mainly because a lot of my friends have it. If my friends play a game I will play too. Online games get boring if you don't know people your playing with. Except fifa really which I play most days.

There is more variety these days. Back in GoldenEye's time the other games were like GoldenEye but not as good, similar gameplay so no reason to move on.
Nowadays comparing Warhawk to CoD4 or MGO is stupid because the styles are completely different.

Another theory I have is:
Online matchmaking systems on consoles are too impersonal. When I use to play BF2 I would play on the same server. You get to know the people on that server and you keep going back, then does not tend to happen on Live or PSN removing the fun that having a familiar foe adds.
The same can be considered when people use to play GoldenEye (or Perfect Dark in my case.) When you get 4 people in a room playing together then the person you just shot in the face from across the room is there to mock etc. My old flatmates and I played SSBM up until SSBB came out and still continue to play it whenever we get together and its probably (although I love it) one of the most repetative games around.

EDIT: A longwinded way of saying what Andy said.

A lot of my friends played a hell of a lot of Halo 2 though and now just don't play at all (hardly any of them have any of this generations consoles). They didn't lose interest in games because when belters like SSBB come along they really get into it and play it for a long time but that seems to be the first game this generation to stir up any passion (;)).

Possibly as games are made to appeal to a wider audience (ranging from difficulty to features and storyline) they become diluted and uninteresting after the hype, plus we've not had many brand new genres for quite some time.

This is what I want to explore. Why are modern games boring and unable to hold our attention?

The online community just doesn't come close to playing with your best mates. I can rely on a friend to guard my back, or sometimes I can't and I will have a laugh either way. Online, if it's a random...usually they run around like a headless chicken OR dominate other people for precious stats.

Halo/Goldeneye/Mario Kart/Kung fu Chaos all involved me and friends chilling out and playing multiplayer games OFFLINE split screen with a mix of abilities...which made things funny.

I remember waiting years for perfect dark to come out and smash Goldeneye out of my N64... truth was, it was a great game. However it had too many options, game types, Ai, guns, maps......So goldeneye was in fact much better...because it was simple.

I miss Kung Fu Chaos, why haven't they updated the 360 so it can work?!?!?!

I understand that Booner!, but my "irl" friends who all used to play games get bored quickly this generation playing local multiplayer.

I'm just pointing out that there are games out there that hold people's attention for longer than 6 months. They're just obviously not the ones that you want to play.

But why have my main gaming buddies lost interest in fps, racing and other normal genres? I've asked them and they don't seem to know either.
