Why does no one play the same game anymore?

I think it's because we have a lot of alternatives now, for different tastes. Back in the old days of Goldeneye and Halo, those two were pretty much the only really good multiplayer shooters. Halo 2 dominated the console online space back then because it was the only real shooter on the console which was the only proper online system at the time. Now we have three systems each with online capabilities, and a ton of online games spread across them. As there's no longer a select few games for everyone to flock towards to, gamers are scattered across the broad spectrum of multiplayer games. Even the most popular games like Call of Duty 4 has to fight for the attention of your friends looking for games to play online with.

Yeah Im well up fro some CoD 4, haven't had the pleasure of getting my ass handed to me by people i know yet :p

Don't have Gears any more though :(

ahh good thread this, games holding my attention of any length of time has become very apparent say in the last 2 yrs.It could be an age thing i guess, or just an oversaturation of the same old gameplay elements.I think as gaming has really taken off its become more of a money spinner and developers have become some what lazy, and too frightend to take chances, so stick to the tried and tested formulas.Saying that, im still a tad optimistic.

I understand that Booner!, but my "irl" friends who all used to play games get bored quickly this generation playing local multiplayer.

Personally I've found this has happened 'cause we'd rather be out playing footy, out on the lash, or just generally outside!

That's no so for the general population though as I still do just as many physical activities and drinking as I always have done, yet games seem dull bar a few exceptions after a few days play.

I remember playing 4 player deathmatchs on Goldeneye every school lunch break back in the day(8 years ago). A bunch of us would rush over to my place and just play Goldeneye for an hour we had for lunch. We were also late for class and never had time to eat. Those were the days. :D

Now it seems most games are made to be played over the internet instead of in your house with friends. Kinda sad when you think about how much fun games were back in the day playing with your friends.

Yeah good point, after every GCSE exam everyone would pile around my house for some four player GoldenEye.

Seems like Internet play (for consoles) and lack of variety coupled with too much choice is the general consensus.

Internet play is a good point that I hadn't considered before. It's strange that a system designed to create more social play has crippled it somewhat.

Too much choice is definitely my issue, plus a lack of time. There are still so many games I'd like to play and dedicate some decent time to but I just don't have the free time to do it.

Dood thread this, I was thinking about this a few weeks back, it seems as soon as a new game comes out, its followed by another one.

On the subject of Goldeneye, and sneaking through the vents...haha I forgot about this!! what a laugh it was.

Damned screen lookers always thwarted those attempts.

Not when you made a big cardboard screen divider up against the screen 9took some time to perfect the curve of a 15" old school CRT and it was long enough to rest on the bed with 2 of you sat either side.

Then of course health -10 and radar off + the cartridge cheat thing that allowed u into the whole of faculty and archive. :D

Happy days, wonder what happened to that beast of a cardboard device!

Not a lack of time for students like me though.

I've been free from mid June till mid September so I don't have a lack of time either, I just cant be bothered to go back to games that I haven't finished - if I do go back its purely for achievements!
