Why does no one play the same game anymore?

Not a lack of time for students like me though.

That's true you bunch of lazy sods! :p

I suppose I get more gaming time than a lot of people but it's still not enough time to play everything I want! :D

Edit: I have games on the PC, 360 and PS3 that I want to play but I tend to get 'into' one game at a time and will play that to death then move onto the next game.

Right now I'm heavily addicted to Diablo 2 again :)

I'd say choice. Back in the day you only really had two options as a PC player: UT or Quake 3 and consoles were limited to playing Goldeneye with your mates. These days almost every game has a multiplayer component, leading to the fragmentation of the player base.

You miss the point I'm making.

People used to play the same game for a long time, so what has changed that makes them bored of games quicker than the previous generation of games?

Maybe because its all been done before and there isn't enough variety anymore to keep people interested. (ie despite the differences in FPS games there are fundamentally similar - shot enemies, capture this, hold that etc).

Well that and American kids swearing constantly on live.

I think it's down to several reasons.

Back in the day, online play was restricted to PCs only and was accessible by much lower number of people. Consequently, when you played Counter-Strike, you'd join a server and you'd tend to see the same faces every time you played and you'd begin to strike up relationships. Once you made that connection, you might progress to having an IRC chat room for your group of friends and you'd all connect to it and spend time in there.

I think this method of play with the smaller number of players and the centralised server-based community is the reason why so many communities started up back then. It doesn't happen with Xbox Live because the games are all individually hosted so you never get to meet the same people twice and I would argue that most people wouldn't hit it off based on a single play session with a bunch of strangers.

Secondly, I'd argue the following:

* The PC was the only online gaming platform back in 1999 when CS came out
* Most PC gamers would have bought Half-Life since it was such an amazing game - therefore, there was a huge user-base already there for Counter-Strike when it was released.
* Counter-Strike was FREE - people had nothing to lose if they downloaded it because it wouldn't cost them anything.
* It was one of the first titles to offer something more than the traditional deathmatch game model. Therefore, you'd most likely get everyone downloading it and playing to see what it was like.

I think that CS was a landmark release since it had the right amount of time and under the right conditions for communities to develop and establish themselves and there was nothing to seriously rival it for a good few years. It was also kept alive with frequent beta updates that kept the community wanting more and to continually evolve the gameplay with new features without spoiling the core values.......sounds like World of Warcraft perhaps?

Until there is a definitive landmark title with mass appeal, people will keep moving on.

I think the issue is that is more a case of the previous version of the game rather than a whole new experience.

I miss playing joint ops.

*edit* I'm reistalling right now.

I suggest you all go and find a copy and join me.

No online gaming experience comes close to Counterstrike. I dont play online anymore but any game Ive played on LIVE just pales in comparison.

This is what I want to explore. Why are modern games boring and unable to hold our attention?

achievements dont help matters imo

you play a game
get some achievements
you play a game
get some achievements
etc etc

i play games for longer on my ps3 as i feel in no rush
whereas my xbox gets through games quicker as i get the bug!

i think people migrate from games quickly partly due to hype
and partly due to recent games not having that grab factor

i could play goldeneye all day - i could probably list each enemy on the dam and facility levels i did it that many times

no game recently with exception to dead rising has made me replay its campaing over and over

recent games especially fps games are just forgettable and have predictable stories

Maybe your course mates play a variety of COD4 games? Which would mean your benchmarked for academic ability against a bunch of 'retards'.

I usually play team tactical on cod4 on the ps3 with my best two mates and when more of them are online we play search and destroy as a clan.

The cod4 disk has been in my ps3 for months now, I may have others like gta4, gt5p and msg4 but I still end up going back to cod. :D

Same can't be said for the wii though, swap through ssbb, mkw, smg quite frequently.
