I can't think of any reason why it should, but it does. In fact a lot of hydrocarbons smell nice like marker pens. Although some of them smell really quite terrible like alkyd-based paint.

I think you're confused again, I'm not from scotland.

:D

I've heard somewhere that enjoying custard and the smell of petrol are somehow related. I don't know why, how or if it's even true, but I love custard and the smell of petrol is amazing.

would you like the smell of petrol if it was pored over you and it set a light ?

or if you were knocked over by a car and the last sensation was the smell of petrol..

i only like the smell because of what it can conjur up, some pretty good memories at track days/car shows

I'm with Kwerk on this one. I love the smell of it and strangely my daughter loves the smell too.

There's something not quite right about you either tbh..

just trying to point out that it could just be psychological..

nice input into the thread though, well done.. really helps people understand the cause..

It's psychophysics, and I'm sure someone will explain exactly why and which receptors in our little heads go all crazy when we sniff stuff we shouldn't.

Petrol sniffing isn't a cause I give up lightly you know.

Probably the aromatic hydrocarbons like benzene have a distinctive sweet smell which is quite pleasant - in marker pens it is xylene, nail polish it is toluene etc. As for why it's 'nice' it could be anything from mental association to just liking the 'sweet' smell.

Similar thing being the fruity smell of esters when you make them in chem lab.
