why does ram still cost so much?

I was just about to post the same thing, OP.

I'm looking to upgrade from my budget DDR2-800 to some Kingston 1066mhz. £90 for 4GB...
I was surprised to still find DDR2 so dear. I get the whole old=rare=expensive thing, but there still seems to be loads of places selling decent DDR2, just all at elevated prices.

I guess they reckon anyone still buying DDR2 is stuck in a 'refuse to upgrade' mindset and will happily pay more for the older gen instead of forking out for a whole new rig.

i seem to recall the prices on RAM crashing through the floor just after the release of vista. Whether the two were actually related or not (vista being the memory hog it is), i dont actually know but i always have associated the two. Then prices started rising since about q2/q3 '09 and hit their highest about q2 this year.
