Why does steam automatically update graphics card drivers?

It's a good feature. I usually forget to check for the latest cats, so was a nice reminder and made it very easy.

Roll back your drivers and worry about something more important. It's not like the latest cats made your PC explode..

I see no problem with the installation of the drivers and the fact it does it automatically after clicking 'Check now'. It does say it will automatically take care of the rest and install the latest drivers for you and the 'check now' button is just basically the first step in an automatic installation process you are agreeing to.

If you don't want an automatic installation, as it states, then don't do the check.

Its a good feature poorly implemented... any other updater usually verifies the version and then prompts you again if your version is out of date... typical of anything ATI/AMD really I guess.

Can I assume that it's not going to do automatic updates of the drivers now? if it is where do I turn that option off ?

What is the problem with updating to the latest drivers?

If you have an older card the newest drivers are not always the best. They update the drivers based on tweaks for their newest card range. They don't really waste any time Q&A on the older cards and wait to see if people complain.

Good point actually.

Looking at the GPU stats of the users, there are a lot of users knocking about with olders cards - http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/videocard/

I clicked check for drivers the other night and it didnt install new ones

Might have something to do with the blue screen that flashed up a couple of seconds after clicking though ;)

I actually think it's a great feature - the fact that you don't need to restart immediately afterwards (as using a downloaded Ati installer requires you to) is a great convenience. Plus if they get it working well enough to make it a "silent" automatic feature it'll be a boon for people who don't know enough about their computers to do it themselves.

no because people who all of a sudden start experiencing problems in game/s will have no idea what went wrong.

i did the update through steam but then had to reinstall the older drivers because it made the game i was playing glitchy(titan quest).

It used to be best practice to remove old drivers and all traces of them before installing new ones. I guess that's not true anymore.

last time i checked the aTI site they advised you to install over the top and not to delete the old ones.
I keep looking for that on the official driver download site, i'm sure i'll find it one day?. Anyway, i found this somewhat amusing on the official driver site...

:D

This is a good idea, as a lot of people wouldn't know how to update graphics drivers and could be using very old ones.
