Hi All,

i'm having this problem which i cannot seem to get around..

Basically i done a fresh install of windows xp and after the install i was getting the BSOD but i manage to fix that.

The problem is an unusual one basically when windows loads without connected to the net eg wireless or ethernet in runs ok i can goto the start menu and click on programs etc. But when i connect to the net via wireless or ethernet the computer freezes. iI try and restart but it just hangs at startup it will not load any drivers. eg at the bottom right hand corner there's nothing just hangs,,

Does anyone know how to over come this problem i'm getting.

My Spec:

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R
Corsair HX 520W psu
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series DDR2
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.40GHz
Leadtek GeForce 8800 GT ZL OC 512MB GDDR3

Could just b something simple like the ethernet drivers themselves causing the problem...?

Try disabling the ethernet and wireless ports in the bios and boot up then, see what happens as well.

Have you installed the chipset drivers? If not, bung them on, if you installed them from the disk that came with the mobo download the latest one from the net.

You could also try this;

Bung in the XP disk (if it autoruns close it), click Start > Run, type in SFC /scannow. This sometimes solves odd issues like this.

One last think, do you have any AV installed? It could be misbehaving when It tries to update. It also might be worth checking for spyware.

Lastly, download a Linux Live disk, if you get the same shenanigans you've got a hardware issue.

Yeah i tried different ram and still the same....

i'm re-installing windows and will let you know what happens..

and i'll try the latest drivers..

thanks for now...

I've had a similar setup to that and never experienced any issues as you describe. I had the P35C-DS3R though, though I think the network is the same.

You'll need the intel chipset software installation utility from the intel site, that should install the latest drivers for the P35 if that is the issue. I think the network is realtek, which is always picked up by windows and I haven't had an issue with the default drivers. You could use newer ones from the realtek site, but iirc they have painfully slow download speeds in the UK, so perhaps another source.

The advice to try a linux disc is spot on, try ubuntu live cd or similar and see if you still have issues, that rules out windows.

Have you checked for BIOS updates? Also use a decent CD to install XP, i've had issues with scratched ones and dodgy installs.

well so far so good sp 3 is installed and i'm getting the net now. so i'll get the latest drivers don't want to start all this again..

Man Pc's eh

yeah i think i will need to.

What's happening is as soon as i connect a ethernet cable it will not load windows and when i remove it it does...

I've never seen this before

That is weird. Have you changed the cable? I've had machines busted by dodgy printers sending spikes before.

Try linux and see if it still happens, then i'd try another windows disc. Hell, you might even want to stay with ubuntu if you like it! :p

I would also try any other possible way to connect to the net ex: pci ethernet card, usb wireless, heck, even dial up. The main thing is to troubleshoot through trial and error to pinpoint the problem. Don't give up. Don't let this beat you! Nothing makes me more mad than being defeated by the machine in front of me that I built. That's what it will be if you just use a different OS. I have encountered many driver/hardware issues, and some more difficult than others. I have never gave up and I have found solutions to my problems to make sure everything, I mean EVERYTHING works the way it was supposed to.
