Why does Vista cache so much ram?

I've been using vista for 3 weeks now, it's not a long time i know! But i love it!

As someone has already said, when you type your password in at login, and hit enter everything is just *there!* and you can start opening msn / firefox or anything as soon as you hit enter to log in! it's great, i love it.

Not had 1 problem in games either, constant 60FPS with all gfx settings on full ( 4 AA - AS off ) thats good, as my monitor cant do any higher :p

The only time i ever got any user interface lag, was when i had Kaspersky firewall / virus scanner installed, i took that off and now its kool again.

Vista normally munches at around 40% of my 2gb RAM, however, today its using 29% :o

Not so sure about this pre-caching business, most programs take the same time, if not longer to load than they did in XP.

I haven't noticed a huge improvement either.

How can your programs be just there? At some point it will still need to load them from HDD into RAM, they don't just magically get into RAM otherwise. And unless Vista can make your HDD spin faster, it won't be any quicker than XP.

I noticed pre login boot up time was much longer. I wonder what's happening there? ;)

That'll be your drivers. Vista has a much faster boot than XP.

They can be "there" as a result of prefetching them... Once the bootup is complete Vista immediately starts the prefetching process. So by the time you've come back from brewing a coffee it has already prefetched all your startup applications like MSN and Outlook and loads of other things into memory. Which is why login can be instant.

To be honest that whole paragraph makes it seem as though you don't have a clue as to what Superfetch is actually doing :/ I didn't get that impression from your other posts so maybe you just didn't think that one through too well :D

Not on my machine it doesn't. Do I need a Dual Core CPU? :p

By the time I've come back from brewing a coffee? lol. What is the difference between sticking my most-used apps in the startup folder under XP? Or are you telling me that Vista makes my HDD spin faster than it does under XP? Would you like to buy my magic beans?

vista is much faster then xp. it takes my pc 9 seconds to bootup. once vista as finish loading, it starts to load the most used files in ram and usb flash memory stick, that only takes about a minute or less, u can't even notice its doing it... i been using vista since january 26th ive had no problems with it..

I'm running a single core A64 and I have to say Vista is considerably quicker on boot up and doing stuff compared to XP which I had used since XP was released. I can only see Vista getting quicker as it matures, as that is what happened to XP.
