Why Does Windows Update Want To Update Non-existant Software?

This has baffled me for ages.

I install Office, and I exclude Access, One Note, InfoPath or whatever etc.

Then I run Windows Update and it makes me install dozens of updates for the programs I de-selected! So I have to go through and deselect it one by one and manually hide it.

Why?

I believe the core components of each program are installe whether you select them or not, so security updates still apply. Could be well wrong
