Why doesn't OCUK have a reputation system?

Because, my dear anonymous forum goer, rep systems ideally are supposed to work like this: "Hey, your post was helpful and/or informative, I think you deserve some reputation points!"

However, in reality they tend to go like this: "Hey, you agreed with me in this argument and/or posted in my stupid spam topic, have some rep!"

Hence they are stupid.

Edit: Oh I also forgot 'haha, that image macro from 2004 you posted was hilarious...'

On another forum I'm on it was introduced at one point.

One of the moderators was a bit of a ****, thought he knew everything about everything. Thing is some advice he gave out about stuff was just downright dangerous. I'm sure he was trying to help (well that or just grow his ego) but sometimes was giving out dangerous advice pretending he knew what he was on about . I'm not an expert on many things, so I don't claim to be!
Within a few hours of the rating thing being launched he was the most rated person, and not in a good way! The rating system swiftly disappeared and hasn't come back since...

If you've ever posted on the bodybuilding.com forums, especially the misc, you'll know a rep system is a bad idea. It's continuously abused.

No thanks.

I don't really see the point in a rep system except as an ego boost for a poster who has a good 'score', I already tend to know the people whose advice I rate on certain topics and if I don't know them then I'm quite capable of making up my own mind based on what they post. I suppose if it were used properly then it would function as a form of recognition for the useful posters but I can imagine it being abused quite easily.

Our members are regular/active enough to carry there rep's with them in there username & sig, For anything else there's Trust.
Trust is where its at.

This.

Plus there would be drives to hammer someone or others rep every so often just to annoy eac other. Good idea in theory but doubt it would work

VXR forum tried the Vbulletin reputation system and it didnt work.

Those who were unpopular got spammed with negative reputation

Those were popular and had loads of friends on there just spammed them with positive reputation and it turned into a game of who can get the most reputation points.

Completely defeated the whole object of the system so they just removed it.
