Why don't I like whiskey?

I have tried it many times as I really want to like it. However, whenever I do try and drink it it always has the same effect. All it does to me is burn on the way down, doesn't have any taste other than pure alcohol and they all taste the same to me. I really want to like it especially when I see others saying they love it. I used to feel the same about red wine but then I managed to make myself like it but with whiskey and brandy my body just wants to reject it lol. Does anyone else find themselves in the same boat or do you have any tips ?

I love whiskey, but only drink it with ice and soda. Sometimes ice and water if I don't have any soda. I find that it dilutes the taste, but doesn't completely destroy the whiskey flavour like if you mixed it with coke or something. Could be a good way to transition into it. The better whiskey I have, the less soda I put.

Most I know drink whisky with a bit of a water to mellow the taste. Perhaps an idea until you get used to it, then if you want it stronger, just wean the water off gradually.

I find myself the same with all neat spirits though - not so much the burning, which I don't mind too much, just that I want to drink them too quickly (coming from lagers and ales), rather than savour the flavours. As a result, they all seem to taste the same to me. I doubt I'll ever be a spirit drinker.

PS, out of here with your dodgy American spelling "whiskey". :p

I've tried drinking it with coke but I still can't stand the taste is the whiskey. I mean I like bourbon (jd) but whiskey seems not to agree. A friend let me taste an expensive whiskey which he swore by but to me it smelled and tasted like tcp. I can see your point about cheap whiskey but I've seen lots of people drinking the cheaper end and still like it ? Maybe I should just resign to the fact i may never like it. Annoying really as I love cigars and I always think they go and in hand

I think I'm is the same boat as you tbh and apologies it's the autocorrect on my American iPhone lol

I am no Whisky lover in general, but it is beer that I detest!
JD Honey is nice straight. I may have a bit of Whisky if I am at the Rugby, but that is it really.
JD and coke is lovely, but I also think why should I spend money on Whisky only to dilute it - May as well be some cheaper brand if I am going to do that.

I do like to wind the Father up...."Why have you spent that much on a bottle?! Just get the value stuff they're all the same" :p.

You could do what the pro's do and use a small glass add a quarter whisky then add 2 quarters water. At least thats what some say you do. Alternatively just sip it slowly with tiny sips and don't fill your mouth with it.

Me i buy whisky and just add coke and think of it like jack d and coke.

Im not fond of drinking it straight, too harsh to do it really and i don't think most would do that. But if i do i add a little water so its easier on the pallet.
