why go vista? i am un convinced

hello!

i was wondering whos actually planning on going vista and why?
xp seems to do everything i want and all my software works a treat and its fast! yay...

the vista betas i had were quite bad but of cource there betas and RC releaces so i am sure the proper versions will be better

but again my original question WHY>?!
 
Because it looks cool, has all the functionality of XP and more!

You dont need to upgrade yet, but eventually you will - like it or not ;)
 
an UP button?

.... but i know what u mean, things are kinda different in Vista, the shutdown button (moreover the lack of shutdown shortcut keys) certainly annoys me

Jeez, you're still sore about that? :p Can't you use the new address bar in Vista to just navigate back to the parent folder that you want?
 
Back/forward are there. Just the "Up tree" button has been removed and replaced with a new style address bar.
 
be shifting my parents over asap. Gone are the days I'll have to reconfigure there computer every 3 days. In vista you can just lock it down, so they can't damage it by doing what they've "always" done.

As for me I would love to upgrade, but can't justify the cost at the moment.

If you are buying a new os or computer, why stay with xp?
If xp does what you want, then why upgrade.

The days of fiddling around are gone. I want a stable os and from playing around vista is so much easier to setup and use. :)

I like using Ghost as a solution to this :) Still unconvinced about Vista. I'll let everyone else use it for a year and suffer the glitches and bugs before I'll consider moving over :D

To be fair though, we heard this same sort of thing when XP was being released. It never seems quite worthwhile at first and everyone says they're going to stick with what they already have. It never lasts.

It'll take most of 2007 before people are truly convinced to switch to Vista (unless they're buying a pre-built PC, in which case that choice is basically made for them), but I'd imagine it'll become more worthwhile once it's out and it has the software and driver support it needs.

XP was in the same boat when it first came out, and look at it now.

Not quite the same, as most people were still on 98/ME when XP was released, takeup on 2000 wasn't that great.
So XP was a huge upgrade in terms of features and stability, less so at the moment between XP and Vista.

But I do agree that more people will become convinced of Vista as time goes by...
 
I have to say that this is the only version of windows where I'm not 100% sure on. (-Except Windows ME :o )

Ive been using PC's since DOS/Windows 3.11. Every major upgrade has been a big step up. Such as Windows 95 to 98 and 98 to XP being the biggest.

However I cannot see at this moment in time what Vista offers us over XP. I guess only time will tell and the unsureness in me will disappear once Windows Vista becomes mainstream then Vista will really shine.

Well yes... but just to support you - DX10. How long will it be until the majority of games are DX10 only? I'll bet it's within the (relatively expectedly short) lifetime of Vista.

Can you say that you generally need more than 2gb at present? I certainly can't as I'm still with 1gb (lack of testing uses for my PC and lack of money at present) so I'd don't see a huge need for 64gb in the mainstream as yet plus allied to the prices of Ram at the moment I can't see any huge rush for it. I could be wrong of course but that is my non-educated view. :)

Personally I won't be shifting to Vista for quite a while, I've not been keeping terribly up to date but I see no major benefits that make me think spending a lot of money on a new OS is worth it. DX10 appears to be the major change from a gaming point of view and even that is unlikely to be solely coded for until another 2-3 years have passed so since XP is now quite easily stable enough for everyday use (as it should be given the length of time it has been out for) I'll stick with it for a while, at least until my next PC build.
 
hmm lots of interesting points of view here... i am still uconvinced myself... although as a few of you have said i am sure i will be forced to upgrade sooner or later due to software or driver support being stopped for xp...

i think i will be sticking with xp for now and see how things go... i mean i have a mint c2d laptop with 2 gig o ram and dont really want to put another 2 gig in there.. i mean 4 gig for great perfomance ? why? i really thought ms could make some good software that isnt bloated, but this doesnt seem to be the case :(
