Why have graphics stagnated for almost 20 years?

While we're talking about graphics...

Does anyone like motion blur in games? I hate it, and everyone else I know or I've seen on youtube videos turn it off.

Why do games companies keep putting it in games, and on as default?

Motion Blue OFF
Depth of Field OFF
Bloom OFF

you only get these things in real life if your drunk, have cataracts or eat magic mushrooms

To me graphics have been pretty stagnant for the past 5-6 years. It was only when I saw the new Unreal Engine Matrix demo that I truly felt a "next gen" had arrived.

Games have massively improved, would be interested to know what the person who posted this actually plays? If it's just COD & FIFA then I would probably agree :D

Well kinda.

Motion Blur is not something we see except for in the case of VERY fast objects (fighter aircraft etc).

Certainly our eyes adjust so quickly that except in extreme close up situations depth of field is not something we deal with, its really a photographic technique to isolate a subject from a background. Which in the right circumstances could be useful in a game, except that is WAY overused.

Bloom is something noticeable at night eg around streetlights where there is moisture in the air. But as most games are set in daylight and the only real life bloom is looking directly into the sun, surely no-one wants that.

Thing with these settings, same with film grain, chromatic aberration and a few other similar features - there are instances where this can improve the visuals when used with a light hand and artistically/selectively implemented for best effect - but in most cases developers just slap them in indiscriminately as if to tick a feature box.

Another one which has me face palming is head simulation/bob especially if you can't disable and/or fine tune it - there are some people who need a small level of it so they don't feel like their character is sliding around on ice for preference or motion sickness reasons, sometimes a small amount can be useful to give a tactile feel especially if the character is supposed to be heavily equipped, etc. but a full on forced on simulation makes zero sense as it is something you cancel out automatically in real life in a way you can't in a game through a monitor.

I agree with this too. The head bob feels like im riding on a donkey lol.

I think there is a fine line between making a game for realism and making a game for entertainment experience.

I think the evolution of virtual reality games will be interesting in how they focus the game. I just hope its not leaning too much for realism, in a game I can run for miles. But in reality I'm slow walking :D

I think it depends on the implementation.

Per object motion blur can look fantastic, but I'm not a fan of general motion blur that effects everything on screen.
