Why I hate apple...

On the flip side my missus put her phone on a glass of water, it rang and vibrated into the glass and it ruined the phone (no display). Because the top sensor was ok we got a free replacement. :D

I really don't think they are.

Plenty are designed to withstand use in the rain, or at least won't disintegrate at the first sign of water.

Anyway, the point is not how susceptible to water damage the iPhone is. The point is that the sensors are so sensitive that even sweaty hands have been said to set them off, and that's just too convenient a cop out for warranty folk.

Can anyone actually point me to another phone that has water damage sensors in the same "externally viewable" place as the iPhone?

The normal location for every other phone (mine included) is below the battery. So, you know, water actually has to go fairly deep into the device to activate it. In other words sweat or rain won't trigger it, but dunking it in the bath certainly will!

Never understood why one of the sensors is on the top part of the device which is likely to be splashed when taking a call in the rain - I wouldnt back down until they proved the internal sensors had been affected and therefore truly showing water entering the device somehow.

Wish that ion(?) technology (whatever it was called) to spray devices to make them water impermable was commercial released yet...

ps3ud0

Some (especially in the US) don't include Symbian for some reason. Here's another example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartphone

Either way it's either Symbian or RIM that dominate the smartphone arena, with Apple in the middle, just above WinMo and Android trailing from behind. However at the rate Android is increasing I can see that hitting the spot just below RIM at the end of this year, relegating Apple to 4th. WinPho7 will probably stay below Apple for at least a year or so and then that too will probably come in 4th and possibly overtake Android in 2-3 years depending on how good it is at release.

Apples OS has a distinct disadvantage to all the OSs (other than RIM) with regards to market share, as it is only used by one company.

But i'm sure Symbian still outsell all the others in the US as well, just for some reason a lot of US charts don't include it. :)

Nokia as a brand is barely there in the US. As always American bloggers don't understand there is a world outside of their 50 states...

Yeah, Nokia has virtually zero presence in the US and that's why they're not charted by Mashable. Symbian is never excluded from smartphone market reports.

For the price of the iPhone there ought to be £200 in the box.

£500 and the battery lasts a day... what a joke.

£500 is about standard for a smartphone though.

Xperia x10 - £500
Desire - £450
Old Touch HD - £450 when released

iPhones £350-550 (£450-550 for the 3gs) so it's essentially bang on the price. On contract however...

Ah! Didn't realise that, I just assumed the bloggers excluded the OS for some random reason. Also explains the difference in iPhone sales/market share between the US and Europe. :)

When I took my phone in to O2 due to a dodgy headphone jack, I got it back in just over a week. My phone has been in the bathroom during several showers, in the kitchen while cooking, I have had calls in the rain and it was in my pocket when I mooched up Snowdon in December [every time I pulled it out my pocket it was drenched in condensation!]. If the sensors are erm so sensitive, how come I didn't get fobbed off? :/

Did you take it to an O2 shop or an Apple store?

I've heard nothing but praises about the customer service from the Apple Store.

I'm ready to take my 3Gs back due to some small cracks appearing around the headphone jack and 3 red coloured dots on the screen. Waiting on a new case arriving before getting a new replacement.

Barely over a month old. Protect it with my life :p

please tell me that is some inside joke and that you aren't that foolish not to realise those three red dots are sensors??

My phone has just gone 48 hours without a charge and I'm still not on the 20% battery warning. What do you do with yours that sucks the battery out of it in all but 5 minutes?
