Why I prefer Home Computer Gaming over Console gaming?

consoles for fighting and 'party' multiplayer games -ie, awesome when you're drunk and all shouting at the tv etc

Crikey people are so tetchy these days. I was only saying that the PC's architecture is not ideally suited for games.

Agreed.

Build a pc with the same spec as any console and the same games will run very noticeably worse on the pc - you simply get more out of your hardware in consoles.

turn it into a DX by adding the maths coprocessor

Ooh, look at me! I've got a la-di-da Maths Coprocessor, and you've just got a silly SX :p

At least that's what I would have said 13 years ago. Not that I would have been jealous of course you understand... ;)

Having recently turned to the dark side and bought my first ever console I have to say that while PC games obviously have far greater depth, customization and longevity. At least console games are more often than not actually finished when they're released. What's turned me off PC gaming in recent years is the slipshod attitude of publishers. The advent of the Day One patch being their most hateful invention, and the way many punters (fan boys) see this as actually being a good thing! Many of the titles I've personally bought in the past couple of years namely - Neverwinter Nights 2, MTW 2, Arma, KOTOR 2 and even CIV 4 have all been released in a pitiful condition.

Piracy won't kill PC gaming (that's been here forever). Quality, or rather the lack of it. Will.

I think the type of games you enjoy will be the major factor in whether you choose console or pc. Im into realistic driving games, so i will probs always have a PC. But im guessing if you like more arcade style games u would choose a console.

One thing, and one thing only will kill PC gaming.

Piracy.

I disagree.

I admit sometimes when I was young and pocket money was scarce the temptation to "steal" a game from my local car boot sale was strong but since I have a job and money I buy all my games.

For nearly all games you can download and test a demo version so you know what you are getting.

People who don't buy games when they can afford to should have their PCs sold to the highest bidder.

I don't have console (yet) simply because I don't have a High Def TV so playing games on 540*350 or what ever my current tv's output is would look terrible.

When I get a HDMI enabled TV then I'll think about a console.

When my son is older though I'll probably get one as it's more fun playing multiplayer on the sofa than with 2 pcs in a spare room.

True, but then my pc is more than just a game portal.

Music, movies, music production, mixing, video editing, etc all play a big part of my pc usage, so it's an altogether better option for me.

Plus I don't have the money/space for an HD TV :p

I prefer pcs nowadays as i can afford to have a good machine.

cant beat a good shooter on ye olde keyboard and mouse
also pc games are also a lot cheaper

however consoles ruled back in the day, I remember spending soo much time in front of the tv back when i was a little dude
There were games out then that i loved so much

In no particular order
Final fantasy VII, Alundra, Breath of fire 3 + 4, Suikoden 1 + 2(amazin!), zelda link to the past, goldeneye, perfect dark (multiplayer madness) metal gear solid,

There are probably more, but in my opinion i dont think you get games like that made anymore, i mean im no Final fantasy fanboy but VII is simply genius
im never ever going to sell my copy of that game

Games also seem to be lot shorter and heavily focused on graphics more than gameplay these days

Anyhoo thats my thoughts

my PC is used for media, video, dubbing, cutting and gaming, i got a dell xps 710 Hc2 cooling and its great for me, love it rather than gaming on a console with limited stuff.

I like PC Gaming because of,
having a keyboard to type to people.
having a keyboard and mouse for FPS's/RTS's/MMORPG's
having the ability to upgrade easily
having the ability to quit the game or alt+tab out and go on working or browsing
having the ability to write cfg scripts for certain games
having the ability to customise more settings in games
no monthly fee for xbox online or similar
has certain games you can't get on consoles

Advantages of Consoles:
less cheating in online games as it is harder to edit files
good for certain games (fighting, racing, dance)
can be taken to a mates for a quick mess about
has certain games you can't get on pc's

Disadvantages of Consoles:
limited to a gamepad (appart from specialist stuff like steering wheels/dance mats)
cannot be upgraded
games can be expensive
monthly fee for xbox online etc
is limited to gaming only
customisation in games is limited

am i right in beliving its near impossible to play tdu/bf2142 online with a pirated copy due to the online registration key that is needed?

With a €750 price tag for a PS3 and a couple of games, the lure of console gaming has fallen away somewhat.

The machines are actually quite impressive if a little limited in controls. But the price of the games is simply unaccepable.

PC games are still cheaper, and there's a hell of a lot more free content out there. You'll pay a higher premium for the hardware, but in terms of gaming you get a lot more bang for your buck.

I can't say I haven't mulled over this very hard once or twice, but I'm kind of glad I stuck with my PC this year.

I agree that console games are overpriced compared to the PC but for me it's a matter of the best of both worlds. I currently own a 360 and I very recently did a full rig upgrade on my PC so both machines are pretty much on a par with each other performance wise. My complaint about PC gaming is that the market has now split into to just three genres, RPGs FPSs and the occasional driving game. Personally I'm a major fan of racing and have been disappointed with PC releases for about the last three years which is the reason I gave in and bought a PS2 (for the GT series), however the PC will always win for my occasional forays into FPSs if only down to the customisable controls and the mouse keyboard setup.

So certainly for me I now have the best of both, I get the best and most up to date driving games for my 360 and save the real eye-candy FPS games for my PC; I love 'em both...

I have been a pc gamer for many years but the price of having to keep upgrading my pc once a year i could not really afford to carry this on

£400 on just a grahics card is nearly the price of a ps3, The games on a console are a bit more money than pc yes but having to spend £££,s on ya pc to play todays games on full settings is way more.

£400 for a graphics card every year? What graphics cards are you buying? An Nvidia 8800gts will play the next 2 years of game easily. A good midrange computer (good midrange at the time of buying) will keep you playing the latest games for 3 years with minimal upgrades. I got an a3000 with 512mb of memory and an x800 graphics card 3 years ago and with minimal upgrades (2gig of memory (£100) and an x2 processor (£80)) it plays games like SC, M2TW, WoW, and BF2 like a dream. Everything might not be maxed for the latest games, but I am only one upgrade from maxing them all. The latest games at Med-High settings still look as good as the next gen consoles, and in a years time when the effect of new consoles wears off, will look far superior.

To be fair if a 7900GTX is still an amazing card and that won't cost you £400. The Dreamcast at the time at to be king for consoles gamers that loved arcade games. You could get all the Sega hits on one console. Now you have to buy every dam console if you want them all now dam it. (Mad at unfair gaming life)

I'm guessing the Wii has got to be best now at that arcade feel. Yeah there's no arcade ports but it's that pick up and blast feel that will give you a similar excitement you'd get from being in the arcades.
