Why is anyone installing Vista?

I in no way mean this disrepectfully, but why on earth go through all the heart-ache of installing a product that is only going to currently cause heart-ache?

Have I missed something?

Because its FUN numbnuts! Its one of the biggest newest pieces of software ever published and we all want a go. Are you mad to ask this question on an enthusiast forum??? We want it right now, even if it doesn't work :p :p

Anyways if you keep using your PC, you WILL be using it someday, like it or not. Doesn't hurt to get familier with it now.

Its been a great excuse to justify my new rig to my gf. She thinks the colours are pretty (seriously!!!).

XP will still be my main OS for a while, but this will ocuppy me for a couple of dark February evenings.

Heartache???

It installed in 35 minutes, runs faster than XP on my laptop, hass not crashed and only found one piece of software that doesn't work..

So far I am impressed with it. Just don't do an upgrade in place, do a fresh install...... as is always the same with any upgrade of Windows.

I installed it as I don't like no having the latest things :)

But have not had one problem here yet, all my programs and drivers work fine and Vista Ultimate 32bit for me is very stable and extremly quick, much faster than XP for me. Been running 24/7 since the 24th Jan, not one crash yet :D

My hardware is

Athlon 64x2 4800
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum Motherboard
Corsair 2.0GB DDR PC3200
SoundBlaster X-FI Extreme Music
1x Western Digital 500gb SATA 2
2 Maxtor 300gb SATA 1 (both as backups and to to store data)
Radeon X1900XTX 512MB
Jeantech 700*** Storm PSU

When I had XP the day it came out, drivers were a lot harder to find and most of my things never worked for at least a week or two, with Vista everything except my sound card worked right out of the box :D

That's a pretty large generalisation you've made there.

Possibly... Maybe I've just been reading about people who have done an upgrade then... Maybe they're the people having the issues!?

Personally I'll wait until I build a whole new machine and do a fresh install on that, but that certainly won't be for a long time. a) My current machine is fine at the moment. b) I'll let Vista bed in.

Also, given some of the dire reports of Vista's gaming performance (eg: HL2) waiting is possibly a good thing...

Iv had vitsa installed since yesterday everything works as it did with XP apart from i my built in web cam needs a new driver,

Took me 1 hour to do a clean install and like i said everything is runing a treat :)

Not going to touch it until the first service pack comes out... had enough of being a BETA tester in my lifetime. :D

Been running Vista for a few days now and it's great. Little fiddling around getting used to some of the changes but now that I'm working the Vista way it's pretty cool. Much prefer it to XP and I know in the future things are just going to get better with integrated DX10 support on the desktop etc. :D

Some of us were running the 'new' widgets that are in Vista 4 years ago.
Enthusiast's are usually ahead of the game ;)

i'm just waiting (hoping) for creative to release to release alchemy for audigy2 cards so that eax works in games. i don't have any else to wait for. gaming performance in the beta versions was just fine so i'd imagine the RTM along with RTM drivers will be better.

i realise lots of people have had problems with nvidia/ati drivers and general gaming performance but i've been very lucky. :D

and apart from gaming, all i do is browse the web and listen to music and watch the odd video. i don't think i'll have any problems with vista. :)

My point is that it's not causing heart-ache for everybody.

I've had Betas and RCs running fine since late last year, and the driver support was abysmal.

Yeah, there are people with problems, but every piece of software has it's problems, games and whatnot.

Some people have Vista working fine and smooth, and are enjoying it. For them, it was worth installing. However, some have installed and found that it gives nothing but problems, and I think you'll find that many of these are becuase they have unstable hardware, and/or the drivers are immature.

No probs here with HL2 and Vista :) Ditched XP 2 months ago whilst using the Beta Vista's. Now on retail Ultimate and lovin' it :D

I'm not sure either. I wonder if it is the same kind of people who must buy the latest mobile phone, even though their old one works perfectly well.

After reading the original post I was going to say a similar thing. We all have our soft spots and purchase updated products we don't absolutely need. I always want the latest version of programs such as Windows and Office and yet I've had my mobile phone for around 4 years and have no intention of replacing it until it eventually bites the dust.

I think people will buy Vista for a variety of reasons. Gamers preparing themselves for DirectX 10 games will want to get a Vista system up and running. Those who work with PCs and who are likely to come into contact with Vista at work in the near future will want to be up to speed with Vista as soon as possible. There will also by those who are just bored with XP and want something different without moving to a Mac or Linux.

Some are having problems with Vista but when you compare it to the problems you may have had with DOS/Windows 3.1/95/98/ME*/2000/XP when they first appeared I think Vista actually does quite and doesn't have half as many problems.

*ME has to be the biggest POS MS ever released. I think it stayed on my HDD for around a week in total before going back to the much better 98SE.

Works fine for me, no issues whatsoever.

Lots of people having problems simply don't know what the hell they're doing.

Personally, I like checking out a new operating system.

I tried the Beta but there is still no Vista driver for my scanner and it is quite a useful tool to me so I'll wait until scanner drivers become available. Perhaps the bugs will have been sorted out by then.

Oh, and anyone got the 64 bit version and finding it good?

I was using 64-bit RC1 before I got my copy of Home Premium, so I'm kinda used to using it now. I find it a lot better than XP - not sure why that is though. It just feels better, everything seems a little more intuitive, all the useless menus are out of the way and all the stuff you need is right there. Theres no hunting through directories trying to find the right one, because they seem to be nicely placed (e.g. Personal Documents - where the hell were they in XP? Like, 10 folders in!).

Loving the new Media Player. I spent about 5 hours just arranging all my MP3's and getting the album art for them. Pointless I know, but when you have Vista which looks so nice, you sort of want everything else to look good too. :)

I had a few problems with games in the RC1 release, but since installing Home Premium and grabbing the 7.1 ATI drivers I haven't had a problem with anything. City of Heroes, Half Life 2, Counterstrike Source, etc, all runs fine, no noticable drop in frame rates as far as I can see.

I installed it early mainly because I'd just upgraded to a new system, so instead of going through the trouble of putting stuff on XP then having to reinstall over the top of it sometime later, I jumped straight into Vista. Something I'm not sorry about.
