Why is C drive (M.2) at 100% usage?

This can't be right. Just sat here with Chrome open, downloading a Steam game (to a different drive), nothing else running, and my M.2 (Samsung 961 512GB) is at 100%. Can feel it too, as everything is sluggish. Its temperature according to Hardware Monitor is 48 degrees. Something definitely not right... :confused:

Motherboard is Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 7 and 6700K, 32GB RAM.

Which Driver are you using if any.
 
I found the info relating to Chrome and Skype, and implemented that, but the problem has still occurred. I think it has something to do with Steam, as it happened again while downloading a Steam game. What doesn't make sense to me though is that Steam isn't even on the M.2. I installed it to an SSD and the game was downloading to that SSD. Why would it impact usage on a totally different drive??
 
Do you have the Steam game folder also on the other SSD? I can't really see a single download swamping an M.2 drive. What does task manager show is running and using the resources?

Please see my thread here from a while ago about my active time being 100% with the same drive (lower capacity) TLDR after a lot of fiddling and trying to fix stuff fresh windows was my only resolve.

Yes 100% usage... the Task Manager Performance tab looks the same as yours, only my read times would get much higher, in to the hundreds.

Steam seems to trigger it I think. I shut Steam down and the usage dropped right back down, but then when I loaded Photoshop it happened again. :confused:

So after you installed Windows, it never occurred again?
 
If it's a new Windows install I guess Steam is too, so is Steam re-downloading everything via the M.2 Drive?
In Task Manager under processes, which ones are showing most disk usage?

I couldn't even get to it last time it happened, system pretty much froze up. Seems to be OK for now, but I will check that next time it happens... if it does. I've disabled a few things as per some suggestions on the MS site (pre-fetching and background process stuff), which based on people with similar problems seem like potential culprits. We shall see.
