CPU section is refined and free from the shackles of company love addiction.

We talk about cache and clock speed and nm and sockets and speed and history and temps and overclocking and...Well I could go on.

This area of the forum is cool...Unlike GFX that has a reputation of .....

well you all know what I mean if you read this.

I myself want Truth....not emotional skitter skatter when I read in here.

So my view is if you are going to post an opinion then at least backup your claims.

If not then why post?

Its a public forum, which is cool...But at least backup the preaching with Facts...not emotion.

Is this to much to ask?

It would be good if every post made on here listed sources. It would be ideal if they listed complete (e.g. including testing methodology) sources. However, such sources are scarce, and inclination to hunt them down through google to answer a question which generally should have been answered by the OP using google anyway tends to be lacking.

I think it would be fair to say that the quality of the opening post directs the thread that follows. "Spec me all watercooling cos I don't know anything" rarely goes well for example. There's then threads with a mix of opinion, some that can be verified through google and some which appears to be absolute nonsense. However every now and again a really good one turns up, complete with mathematical reasoning. Special thanks to fornowagain and Jokester as I've learnt considerable amounts from each of them.

Most threads are opinion driven, people basing their opinions on Google's sources and their own reasoning. I think this is a good thing, it's what forums excel at. If a thread degenerates into the stereotypical ati vs nvidia, best ignoring the trolls. For my part I try to state when my point is conjecture, and provide sources if it seems necessary. As such, here's an example of a good thread in my opinion.

Good luck with this thread, I can see it ending badly

I know exactly what you mean easyrider.

Because of the way that GFX seems to operate, if you post facts based on personal experience and back it up, you tend to get ignored anyway. The only way that some peeps get noticed is by posting "Fanboy" statements, which then degenerate into the usual free for all.

The CPU section nowdays, is a lot more "cut and dried". Shure, peeps express opinons, and those opinions seem to accepted for what they are without things degenerating into a slanging match. But peeps tend to get more "help" rather than "opinions", and that help by and large is based on other users experience which is fact based.

Of course, you don't have to go back that many years when the cpu section was very similar to the gfx section. Then it was AMD v's Intel fanboys. That has now changed.

This section is NOTHING like the GPU forum... yet.

As AMD become more competitive towards 2011 on the CPU front tho I see things going back somewhat to the good old fanboy days.

The GPU part of the forum has filled up with kids who don't understand the difference between disagreeing with someones opinion and attacking them personally for having a different opinion*... personally I blame the likes of southpark... even the old fanboy days back along weren't as personal and obnoxious.

* Or when they do understand the difference they are bored and just like to amuse themselves at other peoples' expense.

EDIT: And as your post/thread is probably partly a thinly veiled dig at Big.Wayne - atleast hes an enthusiast at heart, generally knows his stuff and has a point - even if he does try to blanket apply that point to both situations where it does and doesn't fit :D

The Overclockers here are a group of enthusiasts, many have deeply held beliefs born of self experience that form their opinion i.e. IMO or IMHO. Not everyone is created equal, and not everyone has the same communication skills to allow them to put forward an opinion without antagonising a different set of beliefs held by another section of people.

What we should agree on, is that enthusiastic, passionate people are what we need in a forum to make it progress. Two sides arguing point and counterpoint may allow a third party to form his/her own opinion.

I like the differences, it's a healthy mix of personalities. If this forum was just devoted to the researchers and propeller heads, then it becomes very insular and elitist.

Indeed the mixture of opinion can be educational and keeps things interesting...

The petty bickering and obnoxious comments from a few immature people is neither... unfortunatly its hard not to defend your reputation/opinion even when you know better than to argue with these people.
