Why is fibre so unstable for me?

Every single speedtest I do at random intervals of the day, they're always so different and it fluctuates so much. Sometimes it can be 150 mbps+, or it can be 2 mbps, or in between.

Right now it's at 2 for some bizarre reason and my ping is atrocious in online games.

Anyone else had similar problems with Virgin fibre? I wish I stayed on my 10 mbps BT line tbh.. it was extremely stable with zero disconnects, but Virgin fibre is the complete opposite.

By the time I finished typing this, it's at 14 mbps, still slow as balls, though.

Because Virgin oversubscribe in some areas, sometimes massively which affects the service for everyone. Often they're very aware but do nothing.

Could be a fault though. Have you called them?

Try running a speed test late at night (past 12 at least) at regular intervals and see if the same fluctuations occur. I'd also agree it's most likely just congestion throttling but its first best to make sure it's not an actual line fault.

I'm assuming you're also not using wireless when doing the tests?

try running a traceroute using the tracert command through the command prompt.

I had connection issues the other day, mainly high ping and packet loss and my connection to london was being routed through central Europe.

No idea why, sure if I checked now it would still be happening tbh.

If the speed is bad during peak hours and good at night then it's most probably over-subscription. If you're having problems with Virgin's internet, 99% of the time it's going to be because of over-subscription.

From what I've heard it can take anywhere between 6 and 18 months for them to fix it. Three years ago, when I had oversubsription in my area, it took them around 9 months to fix it. However now that they've increased their capacity (at least in my area), it is hands down the best internet service I've ever had.

Meh, turns out my dad is downloading a game on Steam at 13 mb/s, which means the net is okay for now, but I'm getting shafted cus of wireless.

Before when no one else was on, it was still terrible. Need to contact them and see what up I think.

Yep wireless puts so many variables into the mix, with a standard superhub and any sort of decent distance between you and it you are unlikely to get near full speeds.

Wire directly into your router to rule out any of your network, your speed changes sound too sporadic to be Virgin oversubscribing.

Sounds like you could benefit from flipping the Superhub into modem-only mode and running a router with decent QoS options. After you've ruled out congestion as a possible cause.

Are those powerline adaptors any good? The router is downstairs, I'm upstairs. Getting a wire from the router to my room isn't possible tbh.

Here's a speedtest from just now, on wireless:

I'd be so damn happy if this was consistent, but it's not.
