You would think that simply backing up the savegame folder for Dirt 2 would be enough for me to restore the game after I formated PC ...

But noo, I of course forgot that it is a GFWL game and thus the saves will not work without backing up GFWL.

Why can't Microsoft create a worthwhile piece of software for once.
I'm not buying any game that has GFWL in it ever again!

I had the same problem with GTA VI mate, there are ways around it, google how to get around it for GTA 4 if it's a huge problem, but beware it'll probably stop you playing online as it's essentially hacking GFWL to prevent it checking that you're all properly sync'd.

Yeah I really do dislike GFWL, and only use it if I absolutely have too such as with Street Fighter 4. I wish they'd have of developed a system more like Steam. That's not to say Steam is not without flaw, but it's a hell of a lot better than what Games for Windows Live is. I'm not sure why it's so poor, I guess the only real reason why I think it might be is it's more of a console style platform and would work very well on one, but just doesn't suit a PC.

Although i dont really like GFWL i didnt have the problems stated here...

I just installed a new SSD then moved over all my saved games, Dirt 2, Batman and Fallout 3...

All of those games work with no issues from saves.

Edit

I should say that for Batman to work what i done was created a new game save, closed the game down went to the game save location coppied the game save folder name and renamed my old game save folder. Obviously deleting the new same folder in the proccess.

Then when you load batman all yir saves will be there.

I had Dirt2 on an offline profile, as I haven't got any GFWL games I play online anyway (GTA4 was also offline) .. which means that simply copying and signing into same profile would not work as it only works for online profiles.

Hooray for MS, hopefully Codemasters drop GFWL from GRID2 and F1 2010.

I remember reading (not sure if it was FUD) that GFWL was originally being designed by Microsofts PC gaming department, but the XBox team got control of it - which would explain a lot.

It just inteferes and gets in the way. I want to play a game not mess around with GFWL and its horrible interface, GTA4 takes long enough to load initially as it is and it I have had nothing but problems with DoWII.

Fortunately they are the only two games I recall using it with.

EDIT : On a side note I see mention of SF4. Worth getting? I have seen many positive things about it but I don't want my fond memories of SF2 ruined :). I take it my trusty old 360 controller will be fine for the job?

Its crap (imo) because microsoft see the 360 as their main platform for gaming now so they just half assed this.

my self not had any problems backing up my saves with GFWL i'v done Gears of war, UaW, DoWII, Fallout 3 all have worked each time maybe just the games like you guys are using dirt ect..

Each time I login to the game download my profile start a game and then exit normaly only in one game @)

And their horrible server, still overloaded. I can't register....
If nobody knows what's going on with GFWL (why do games require this piece of ****), so it's all about money.

Can you enlighten me as to what exactly needs backing up then, in order to properly backup Dirt 2 saves?

Depends if you have it added to your online or offline profile, online profile you just need the saved game folder (Documents\My Games\Dirt2 on win7), offline profile you need that plus the Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\GFWL and XLive folders.
