Why is HL2 (TF2) so slow to load & navigate...

It takes AGES to load - can't think of any other game that takes as long. And then stupid things like if at the end of a map you happen to press ESC you get a black screen for like 20-30 seconds... Very clunky!

System specs?

My machine was down to 1GB (1GB failed) when I first got the game, and it was terrible at loading, switching between maps, etc etc.

Got it up to 4GB the next day, and everything loaded incredibly quickly.

See sig! Oh!
Ask the mod who removed it! Oh!

3.2ghz with 2gb or ram!

I find games using the Doom3 engine take forever to load.

I can go make a brew and come back before Doom3/Quake4 decide to load a map :p

Source engine games always load quickly for me.

Looking a TF2...

Around 30 seconds or so to get the the TF2 screen/menu from clicking it in steam...

And probably about the same again to then connect/load a game...

Takes it's time with me too, and i'm on Vista x64 with 8GB.

It's quite pathetic really when you consider the UT3 BETA demo, with superior graphics and higher res textures, loads in about 1/4 of the time it takes TF2.

I've defragmented the local files and TF2 is still slow. Alt and tabbing is something I do a lot from CS which is virtually instantaneous, but it takes too long in TF2. Very irritating.

In Source games you can usually disable the 3D menu background (the tweak guide on www.tweakguides.com should show how), which will improve initial load times quite a bit.

It says to do that with -console...

Now in TFC ~ for me does the console, and in TF2 it doesn't? How do I allow console via steam? Or do I need to use a dedicated TF2 icon with -console in it?
