I have completely wiped a pc which used to have a copy of XP Home on, i has a n unused copy of XP Pro OEM so i decided to stick it on, i booted up using the XP Pro cd and formatted all HDD's, i created a new partition and installed xp pro on it...all working OK!

but everytime i boot, it asks me what i want to boot up into...

XP Professional

or

XP Home edition

if i select pro, it boots up into pro fine..

if i select Home edition, it says "Windows could not start because the following file is either missing or corrupt:

<windows root>\system32\hal.dll

Please re-install this file and try again

is there anything i can do to stop it trying to dual boot and just boot into xp pro?

hi,
you could go into control panel, system, advanced, start up and recovery settings..from there you can edit the boot file to get rid of the offending ghost installation and boot straight to your new xp pro installation. however there might be an easier solution someone can suggest if this is too daunting?......
