WHY is my computer so noisy!!!

I have an 18month-2 year old Evesham desktop.

It has always been reasonable noisy, now it's getting ridiculous.

When I boot up it's ok, but sometimes, not neccessarily directly related to how much I'm pushing it (sometimes just an MP3), it makes even more noise, and the fans go so loud, really really loud, like a small engine, doesn't sound broken, just far too loud for my liking.

Also, when it's like this, the vibrations make the metal case rattle which is a truely awful noise which I have had to try and counter by stuffing the gap between it and my tower-holderonwheelsthing full of DVD's. Kinda works.

- Maybe I should call Evesham about the case rattling?
Anything I can tighten inside?

- What part of my computer is it likely to be, and should I upgrade it?
My mate suggested PSU?

Thanks, Alex

OK, despite my impressive array of wires (probably more than anyone here, despite having an average system), I'll do that again.. Did it once before, made a slight difference..

Is any one fan in a pc considerably louder than the others?

I am in my third year of warrantee, which makes it return to base, so basically I have little to lose on changing the case, so I might try and run it on the floor a while and work out where the rattle is coming from..

what about rubber mounting screw holes for the hard drive, i have them on my case but my bro whos system is a few feet away from me sounds like a rock breaker. and give the fans a good clean out, ive found an old tooth brush is very effective for this

Is this a pre built system by any chance?

Your best bet is to replace the HSF (assuming its a pre built) with an aftermarket one, which will do a better job cooling your cpu and be a lot quiter overall.

The fan is speeding up and slowing down due to the temperature of the cpu.

When it gets hot it tells the fan to speed up to cool the cpu and then slows down again when it goes under a certain temperature.

Actually, if their is any correlation in this, I believe it has been when my room has been more hot, and if I undo the window on a cold night which is next to the pc, it quitens down within a few minutes, does that help our detective work?

Detective work on pc's ****** me off, I wish there was somewhere I could take who I could pay a little more to and say, sort it, new fans, make it funky!
