hi guys,

i have a pentium4 3ghz cpu in my system that seems to run hot, at idle the cpu temp is 48-51c, ive even known it to shoot up during use, i never get any probs with my sys, nor do i ever smell electrical-burning smells, wtf is going on guys? & what can i do?

Sounds like the prescott core to me.

It was always stated that the prescott ran considerably hotter than the northwood it replaced (not to mention it was also slower at lower clocks than a northwood due to its longer pipeline)

*thanks owen, btw, ive added you to my xbl friends list ok...

Yeah, they do run hot. My bro has one that runs at 71Degrees. Now, i would never let mine run that hot, but his is a packard hell, and has been running like that for about 3 years.

I have the 3.2Ghz Hyperthreadinv version of that processor and under load it could easily reach 80C. I got an Arctic Cooler Freezer Pro for it and now it never reaches 60C.

But yes, they are hot runners.

I have a 3.2GHz Prescott (socket 478), it idles at around 37C, and under (100%) load 47-48C, I am using a Thermalright C90 heatsink with Panaflo 92mm fan. :)

Could be a misread or a different later stepping of Prescott that ran somewhat cooler.
