as above my gpu is showing that it is running at x4 when it is able to run at x16?

why is this and will it effect my graphics performance?

I assume you have the card in the PCI-E slot nearest the processor which is x16?

Try re-seating the card in the slot.

The connectors for x4 speed are at the end of the slot nearest the backplate of the of the graphics card (call this the front).

If the rear of the graphics card isn't sitting in the slot properly then the connectors to make it x16 may not be making contact.

I don't think I explained that very well but hopefully you get the idea.

ok after i tried re seating the gard it really f'd up, i could not get the ati drivers to work!!! so i went to the pub with a mate, came back and look!!!!

its working great now lol?!?!?! ty for you help surveyor (again!)

Had same issue with my 580, I put it in, and it was running at x1 (LOL) performance was really horrible, and I couldnt work out why.

Until I spotted it in gpu-z.... reseated and it worked fine.

Guess we just need to learn to not be sloppy when installing PC bits :D

Moral of the story being that the pub solves all problems?? :)

haha i wasnt trying to say the pub solves all problems but in this case it did lol

You're welcome.

You had me worried for a minute when I read the first part of your post.

lol i was worried, when i googled the issue i was reading that i would have to delete all traces of amd drivers and software and reinstal the lot, but after a swift half and roast beef i came home and it had fixed its self lol

i deffo agree with you more haste less speed, i know why it wasnt seated properly, i re did my wc loop and removed the gpu to give the block a little flushing with DI water.

Also, you will find that your GPU will automatically drop the PCI-E speed if it's not in use.

At least my 560Ti does, it'll drop to 4x PCI-E when it's just sat on the desktop, run a game and it'll ramp back up to 16x PCI-E 2.0.

I've never seen that with AMD/ATI cards.

Perhaps it's an Nvidia thing.

Never seen it on Nvidia cards too, could it be a motherboard thing where it trys to save power or allocate resources to other parts of the system ? Could even be something related to how that 560Ti is working or drivers from the manufacturer of that card and not the official Nvidia drivers that have some power saving feature enabled on them ? My ASUS GTX 580 DirectCuii on my motherboard the Asrock Fatal1ty Z68 Pro Gen3 which is the same as buzzlightweight's motherboard does not do that and it is always on x16 as were all my previous motherboards that had x16 PCI-E. Previous motherboard was an Asus P5Q Deluxe with a Q9650 and an AMD/ATI 5870 and again was always set to x16, no matter if it was on the desktop or doing 3D.

HeX you sure the card you have is not loose also in the PCI-E slot or you have some power saving feature or resource allocation feature enabled ?

buzzlightweight why you selling your Asrock Fatal1ty Z68 Pro Gen3 on the members market mate ? It's one of the best boards on the market and a lot better even then their Extreme 7. Not sure why you are selling that .. and you have a nice setup there.

Seems some user error cropped in on some parts of your build with audio problems and other things you seemed to suffer. Make sure 100% everything is seated correctly mate and with that water cooling setup you have make sure nothing is being pulled out of the motherboard or has some weight stress on it that can make it not sit correctly into the motherboard or deform the motherboard or the card/connectors placed into the motherboard.

You will regret selling that motherboard mate, just letting you know there is not many Z68 motherboards better than that on the market. So do have a good think before you waste more time and money on that system and try work out the bugs with what you have and it will be an amazing setup. I noticed on your picture there you have plugged some of the hard drives into the Asmedia SATA connectors, don't use them and use only the Intel ones, they are the ones under that sticker you see on the SATA connectors, there are 4 black and 2 red SATA for intel and 4 red for the Asmedia the ones without the sticker covering them. Your system will start up faster too you will notice. Not sure if you are using them for a RAID setup but I would avoid them and use them only to run single drives off them in a non RAID setup as backup drives or storage drives. Make sure your OS is booting of the Intel Sata ports and if you moved your Page file for windows make sure it is also on one of the Intel SATA ports too.

My setup is here for you to look at.

believe it or not i have moved the 140 rad outside now, it gives me a lot more room and the gpu is on the top slot. I have no errors with anything now, and im selling my board coz i want to get the asus rampage board so i can WC the board as well ;)

Cool mate, was just worried you was selling that because you are having some setup issues with it and gave up on it, which would have been ashame because it's a great setup you have there :). Good luck with your new Rampage setup and do post some pictures when you have it up and running :).
