why is my home setup server not a dns?

I setup windows 2k3 server standard and have 2 other client (home pcs connected on the same network. My internet line comes into a modem which is split using the router and then onto my switch upstairs in my bedroom where ive got my personal pc and the 'dns' server.

Although why cant i log the 2 home pcs onto the dns in my room? do i use the ip address of the dns in my room to input into the dns field of the client pcs?

Are the other pc's getting there ip address's with DHCP? If so, you can add your DNS server to the DHCP properties so it gets sent out automatically.

If you use your internal DNS for your PC's you will have to add a forwarder toy our DNS server. This will usually be your ISP's DNS server. This is so Web addresses can get resolved, other wise you will not be able to use the internet.

You do not HAVE to use forwarders. By default the DNS server will resolve external sites using root hints.

On my dns i put under the dnsmgmt.dsc the forwarders to my isp. On the client's machine what do u mean in the dhcp properties? what i do is i leave the ip address of the client machine and i fill in the bottom section with my ip address of the dns server. is this correct?

No, set the DNS settings in the dhcp scope settings on the DHCP server.

ahhh exactly right! I've started an mcse quick course and i want to learn everything there is to know and practically. Thought this is a good way to go about it if i can set my home computers 'correctly'.

mcse quick course? I doub't you will do it quick if you had troubles with dns like this. Its a major role in IT in both internal and external orginisations.

Iv'e just finished setting up my home domain too.
