Why is my Netgear router so Slow ?

I have 2 wireless routers/modem/wap, an old 3com one and a Netgear DG834G v3 router.

I would love to use the 3com all the time but it's not compatible with the Wii and the DS. So 6 months ago I got the Netgear, and ever since my net connection has been iffy. My web surfing drops (but MSN, IRC and Downloads still works) which then needs rebooting, the ping is stupidly high, and it's also slower ! The 3com can get just under 4mb download from www.speedtest.net, but the netgear can only manage about 3mb.

Do I have a duff one or are they all the same? What makes it slower than the 3com?

Also, is there a feature in the netgear for it to auto reconnect ? Coz sometimes i get disconnected, and the 3com simiply just connect again, the netgear seems to just stop.

Have you updated the firmware since geting it?

I've just upgraded to the latest firmware for my 834g, but even before, it had no problems re-connecting automatically

My DG834 connects automatically.

Do you have the "Connect automatically, as required" option ticked under WAN setup?

i have the gt version of the same router, and yes its crap.
