I have noticed for a while now my pc loads up really slow, when i switch it on the logo appears, blinks and then reappears with a loading sign. then it goes into windows and for around 1 minute all my icons will be white on the desktop and then everything will finally load up. is this a fault somewhere?

Checked for any spy ware or have a look at startup programs.

What Anti-Virus are you using.

Using the windows 8.1 built in (windows defender), already check and remove spyware. Could it be a problem with my motherboard? sometimes when i do restart it shuts down instead

you could try using selective startup (in msconfig) to stop things from loading on startup and see if any are the cause. Though I imagine they would be loaded after the windows splash screen? So I'm not sure if it could help or not.

I would look at your startup programs, as mentioned by RJC. Disable all the programs labelled "high" which are not essential on startup. Which is nearly most of them.

Have found something called delayed launcher, is this a necessary function?

Also what are your guys views on cc cleaner

Most likely Spyware.. did you try doing a system restore / roll back ? .. if it still is slow i would try a reformat / new windows installation before buying any hardware.

Yep, selective startup in msconfig and also in the services tab isolate Microsoft services and unpick everything else. See if it improves your boot up time. Then you can start enabling services again to find out which is causing problems

Looking at your system specs I have no doubt the culprit must your slow hardware :D In all seriousness though my suspicions would be spyware or a software conflict. Try cadmunkey's suggestion and if that doesn't work, I'd probably backup all important files and start contemplating reformatting the machine.

Download and run malware bytes. If that doesn't sort you out then I'd think about rwformating your boot drive. Other than that you can do the obvious )msconfig shenanigans, driver updates and so on)

Hopefully a scan will find something and eliminate it. My brother had a bit coin farmer and a Trojan, ran a scan, removed them and all good now.

It happened on my previous format as well though, it takes roughly 1 minute to boot up from pressing the switch into windows (this is with a pci m.2 ssd which should be faster tbh) and then in windows hangs for a minute.

have you tried to update your bios plus unplug any extra drives apart from the "C" drive , sounds like windows hanging on something added to the pc ?

It seems to be my soundcard that is causing the problem, when i took it down my desktop loaded up straight away but when i put it back in and connected ports to it, it started loading up slow again

Edit: upon further testing it wasnt afterall, hrmm just going to reformatt and hope for the best

It doesn't say in your sig whether or not you're using a mechanical drive or a SSD?

I'm fairly certain your issue could be sorted by a few tweaks in the OS. A fresh install seems a bit drastic.

Well he's already spent a day trying to figure it out, so it probably would be quicker to just format tbh

Level rookie so use my advice with extreme caution, fire extinguisher, wellies, etc.

Is it slow to start up, then is it slow to open a program, click, few minutes it opens - if yes it could be a mech HDD is dying, try a diagnostic test or two.

I recently ran this on my pals PC and it would not run, it failed. http://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?DL

So I tried this, it looks cute very easy to use! CrystalDiskInfo

There is an utterly brilliant system test here (on OC UK site) by the Pros:
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18281472

The usual culprits are memory, PSU, and MB.

If you suspect malware and have not had a spring clean for a while why not reinstall.

If you don't want to reinstall try this:

And the Pros on OC UK posted on my thread here:

Best of luck and we feel your pain :p
