Have you checked the pad level on both sides of the caliper?

Wheel bearing? Is that an old polo?

Is there any axial play - grab the wheel on each side and push/pull it.

No play in the wheel and I've checked both sides and the pads look ok. Can hardly hear it when moving the tyre backwards.

Seems to be fine now. I think there was a stone stuck somewhere.

they can sometimes get jammed up behind the stone guard.
