Has this been done before? A quick search showed up a post from 2007 so I thought I'd start a new one for some light hearted discussion and criticism of other web crap.
I have been, and still am, a member of many online forums. This one, still to this day, is superior than all of them put together.
The software and layout, so simple yet so effective. Why do other forums have such shoddy layouts, tools, navigation? How can such a simple thing to do (as demonstrated here) be done so wrong on other sites?
Then we have the degree of moderation, which other forums again get so wrong but here just works perfectly. We can express our opinions to a pretty extensive degree and we can undertake a significant degree of insults and criticism and laughing at each other's expense without it getting out of hand (at least, not very often). I don't think anyone here really takes much offense at what anyone else says, which is great!
Then there is the level of activity - by far the most active forum on the web. How often have I posted on specialist forums in the past for no response to be received in days or even weeks. Here you can pretty much guarantee a response on any topic within minutes.
Whatever trick they have discovered here to make this work so well and consistently over the past 10+ years, don't change a thing!
