Why is origin such an awful program.

If anyone thinks EA is not some insidiously disgusting company, that apparently doesn't trash good games and doesn't want to charge us for every byte of the game in micro-transactions.

Thankfully their profit margins are failing and their business model of destroying good companies for short term benefit is no longer working for them, goes the same for Vivendi's game arm.

It is irrational hatred, but i don't care, I enjoy gaming and i dislike it ESPECIALLY when a story gets ruined by some money grubbing arse.

Funnily enough however, i still installed Origin on my computer and in fact i find its aesthetics far more pleasing than Steams (default), doesn't mean i stop disliking the company though.

As a downloader, it seems faster than Steam. Steam was brought in for Valve's benefit, no other reason. Limiting games to one user only under the guise of some fluffy gamer-friendly app.

i hate origin because it screwed up my BF3 installation twice.... once admittidly my fault because i tried to move the install folder through folder redirects, but my Steam folder has sat on my second disc since Vista days and several OS reinstalls and moves and has never had a problem with any game.

It's an okay program, my only problem with it is that it sometimes forgets my password, despite having the 'Remember Me' box checked.

It's decent, obviously will take some time to get to the state steam is in now.

I don't like that you can't move around the main folder like you can with steam, without messing up anything you've got installed.

Ehh steam advertises on start up also. Explain what else is "horrific"? Used for a while and never had anything freeze. It's runs fine just like steam.

No it doesn't, you can turn it off in steam.

When i open Steam or have it start with Windows it just sits silently in my taskbar.

When i open Origin or have it start with Windows, it opens the main Window and featured games that i should apparently buy. Sometimes it just completely forgets my saved auto login.

Origin isn't inheritly bad from my expiernces.
However Steam is my one place for games, so it gets on my nerves that I need to have Origin installed as well for a minority of games.

Can anyone tell me how to view all servers for BF3? when I click on servers I usually get 15-20 hardcore servers, I then scroll down and it may load a few more.

However if I look on game tracker I can see that there is a lot more servers than Origin is showing. Why can't I have page numbers for servers rather than scrolling down, it is so annoying that I seem to be missing so many servers.

i love the people who claim steam isnt DRM :D

:D

I really don't get the irrational love to Valve. Sure, they've made great games but they really haven't innovated for a long time now. No new engine (though Source was technically designed to be modular), rubbish modding tools, no new good games/IP and they completely destroyed what was good about TF2.

True, although you may be pounced upon for saying that. Although never a big TF2 fan, it is now just a money-spinner. The game itself has ended up a quite horrible version of playground swaps.

Steam began as DRM and distribution. No amount of addons is going to change the fact they don't want people selling stuff they purchased onwards.

I think Origin works quite well tbh. Not had any issues with it.

Much as I don't want to admit it, likewise. I've used Origin for Fifa 12, Mass Effect 3 and Battlefield 3 and each time its worked...

Its nowhere near as feature rich as Steam, but it works 100% better then GFWL and its doing the same as Steam, buy a game, install, launch and play.

Just comparable to Steam, its content, features and general user base etc is lacking.. Did get a free copy of Burnout paradise with it, so generally can't complain..

I'm not against competition for steam, I just feel EA were the worst possible company to try and compete. I don't trust EA one bit, and as far as I can see they have done more to ruin great game developers then create them, their business model is terrible and has been for years. Valve on the other hand have lovingly crafted some of my favourite games of all time, their games are released polished and are never rushed.

So if it comes down to choosing to support EA or Valve the choice is made extremely easily for me. The fact Steam has the better sales and the better user experience just seals the deal.

Why would anyone install that filth on their computer?

I feel the need to wash my hands just replying to a thread about it.

Erm. So I could play Mass Effect 3 and Battlefield 3, two games I paid for and wish to play...

Bit like how I had to install Steam to play Half Life 2, ooo back in 2005. Fancy that eh?

Far as I know you don't have to choose...crazy I know but you can install both at the same time!! ;) It's not really a matter of support so much as why limit your options? yes steam has the better sales but out of them it is not always cheaper, hell you can still go down your local supermarket and grab some of the games steam has on it for next to nothing....reason being your paying for convenience and steam has had no competition.

Valve has a good business model but if you leave them to grow without competition how long until they pull away from that model and simply start taking you for every penny you are worth....tad of a snowball arguement I will admit but it is the very nature of capitalism that there needs to be competion...hating origin is almost simply cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Valve should really shift their logo to a green colour so we can simplify this whole debate, put it back on ground we are all so annoyingly familiar with.

I have no reason to have Origin installed. The only game I own on Origin is BF3 and that was a huge mistake. While I did have Origin installed however I was left with an application that would pop up on every startup of my system with ads, that alone was enough for me to want to uninstall the program.

Like I said I want Steam to have competition. However EA aren't the company to provide competition. EA thinks very little about the consumer and just thinks about it's profits.

The most obviously good competitor would be existing online retailers. I'm clueless as to why Amazon haven't tried to create a similar gaming platform, it seems like they would be able to provide legitimate consumer focused competition to Steam which would be healthy for everyone, and they have the power to truly compete. Or perhaps Google itself could provide a PC game store within it's Play market, that seems like a good idea too.

I don't have Origin installed anymore. It was once installed for BF3 but as that went down the pan in my opinion I don't have it installed and don't want extra, unnecessary software installed. EA have a habit of only releasing their games on Origin, although there are some available elsewhere.

I feel I ought to point out that I do have Gamefly, and GMGs software installed as well, so I am in no way a fanboy. I always tend to check all of the sites for the cheapest deal before buying.
