Why is RA2 : YR still so good?

:p

if you edit the RA2MD.ini file (its in the RA2 directory)

you can enter custom screen resolutions :)

[Video]
ScreenWidth=1280
ScreenHeight=1024
StretchMovies=no

that's what i use

you can also use 2560x1024 (if you had 2x 19" screens for multiscreen play!)

There are several reasons why Red Alert2/Yuri's Revenge remain great games:

Great story, presentation, acting and graphics (personally I love 2D stuff).

Pick up and play factor; other RTSs have steeper learning curves in my experience.

Competetive multiplayer: Ingenuity of tactics and proficient micromanagement wins over pure unit spam. Matches often swing backwards and forwards in various players favour leading to a more rewarding experience. You can't always say the same for SupCom or C&C3, I think.

SPEED! I hate the plodding nature of most RTS games. RA2 played at a million miles per hour, and the challenge was the make sure your brain kept up with the action.

Anyway, enough fawning over a peice of software...

i used to play a lot of ra2/Yuri, i was even a member of the 'Strike-Team' which ran XWIS while Westwood Online was still running

its so fun, especially in clan games, and so many tactics

i stopped a few years ago though and moved to cs 1.6 :p

i did buy the decade thing though, might install ra2 and see how i get on online

have a pic of this running on 2 of my old 19inch tft's lol was a combination of the extend desktop function in catalyst control center and the ini file. I'll try and find it when i get home, looked awesome either way! lol

thats what i loved about all these C&C games, so easy to edit and mod :)

I havent even played C&C 3 online, I got bored with the missions.

It just doesnt seem to have that 'I must have another game...' thing about it.
I also think it has too many units/buildings, it's too complicated for me.

It's a shame, I really hoped it would.

I know you should give games time, I absolutely HATED YR when I first played it, I'd only just got used to RA2, but then I played it the second or third time...Well...!

If I had only 1 game to play, it would be YR over anything.

yeah im the same, only played C&C3 a bit, and although it is awesome, just still doesnt feel like proper C&C

always find my self goin back to RA2 and YR

for anyone who was interested :)

i'm def setting mine up tonight for some 2x screen action, might lob in my pci card and get 3 on the go :D

really you need 4, 2 below and 2 above for a total res of 2560x2048 :D lol on some of the smaller maps i reckon you'd be able to see the entire battlefield

wonder if theres any kind of limit to the res you can use for the game? or whether its only limited by your screen area?

QM doesnt tend to work if you use a custom resolution, it keeps coming up with;

"Your opponent is using 640x480 resolution do you want to match it"

There is a QM resolution changer which i've tried but doesnt seem to work, I have got it to work once though, I just can't remember how! It was on my last setup though.

Using 1024x768 (max ingame setting) is not THAT bad on a 20" Non WS TFT 1600x1200 was a bit too much, so it'd be ideal to use something like 1280x1024...

Bang on.

C&C3 is still unit spam. YR was always about ingenuity and inventiveness. I won loads of matches just by trying completely ridiculous things and pulling them off. Pure entertainment. :)

Single player is ace, online is far, far, far!!! too easy.

I spam and win.

Did you type define: StarCraft into google for that response? :p

RA2 is won by spamming, you should give competitive SC a serious go. RA2 units move faster than SC units but the pace in SC completely owns RA2, it really does make it look like a very mediocre game in comparison.

Hmm never heard of this XWIS, I'm on the webpage but can't find anything to download, when i go into RA2 and press internet, it brings up the ingame menu, and when I press join custom server, it says it can't connect to westwood, whassup, my game is patched to 1.006 :confused: , how can I play online again ?

Fixed it, under my information there wasn't a server selected, had to manually change it to XWIS server, thanks :D, haven't played this online in a loooooooooong time.
