Running an old X58 platform pc with hex core xeon, 6gb ram and a 128gb SSD (Crucial M4, rarely used). Just installed pc the other day (literally stuck in windows usb, and installed, with nvidia drivers).

Running games fine at 2560x1600 but the system can be a bit laggy sometimes.

Am I missing drivers (am I meant to install something from Intel?) and is there a problem in my bios? Or are the figures consistent with SSD speeeds?

Umm, updated firmware on the SSD?

Emptied the recycle bin recently?

Got it in proper SATA3 ports?

The motherboard will want drivers installed and not the stock ones that come with Microsoft.

your in ide mode still!!! (pciide=bad in as benchmark)

do this first while in windows/ide mode download/run this reg file then reboot to bios

http://cdn.ithinkdiff.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/ahci.reg

pop in bios and anything you see ide switch to ahci mode then save/boot into windows it will be full speed then and booting full speed

(you'll need to re install windows to enable ahci mode if you don't run the above tweak) it will bsod

Did this.

Speed is looking better now!

that's better,it should be fine now

Cheers mate appreciate it. That should keep me ticking over for the next couple of days til my 512gb drives get here! :)

When I do my proper install of the new drives, are there ways I would go about it (eg less haphazardly than this one!), or is setting to AHCI the main one?

just be sure the sata ports are in ahci mode, then install win7/8 as you normally would, windows will install all what it needs for you (ide mode is very slow for ssd's,ahci is what you need)

you can install the intel rapid storage drivers later in windows to improve speeds slightly but its upto you

you will find them on motherboard manufacturer's website

you can also clone across your current m4/install to the new ssd with no issue,it will be fully bootable copy/clone,saves re installing, for that use the free macrium reflect

I probably won't bother cloning stuff across, all I have on the main drive is Excel/Stat/work related stuff with a cheeky bit of Adobe and Steam. Fresh start and all that. All personal files are on two hard drives (USB 3.0 pci express purchased for the speciifc purpose).

I've checked on my motherboards website for the Rampage II but everything is from 2009 and intels website is clear as mud! Ah well, I'll figure it out later.

Thanks again for the help, system is feeling a bit more snappy now. :)

they could be too new for x58,usually they are universal, but the ones off asus website will be ok,be better than what windows installs

if your using the sata 3 port on the X58 board its controlled by a very poor marvell controller.

I have a intel I7 950 running a X58 board and a Samsung evo 840 SSD and I cant get over 250mb write and 410 read on speeds because the controller is using a 1 x lane.

my ssd should getting around the 500mb mark for read and write.

if you google the issue you will see lots of posts about the x58 board having issues with the marvell controller.

if I use the sata 2 port I get 280mb read and 270mb write.
