Simple question (like me :p)

Why does a domain name in active directory have to have a full stop i.e. random.fred.
I understand if you have a child domain u have to have a full stop i.e. sales.randon.fred but why the .fred ???

Cheers

Wouldn't that be the top level domain? like support.microsoft.com ??

If you are doing local "internal" domains, I remember Microsoft suggesting doing something like domain.local

Actually a top level domain would be just com

I believe AD domains are given a name.something format simply to tie in with DNS domain naming format. As you may or may not know AD relies on DNS extensively.
