Why is there no space shooter MMO?

I posted before about a new game hopefully coming out this year called SOL : Exodus which is a spaceship shooter like X-Wing/Wing Commander with some BSG type storyline. But, as I was playing Eve Online the other day I was wondering why there isn't a similar game in terms of skills/levels/trading but with the combat style of a space shooter. The ships you could fly and weapons/modules you could use are determined by a set of skills, but the combat would be like X-wing. In an MMO type environment this would be amazing. Flying on missions in a cockpit perspective with your buddies as as wingmen taking on NPC's in PVE or other players in PVP.
I like Eve, but it feels so detached when you zoom out to see the whole 'battlefield'. I'd pay good money to be in the thick of it like these old favourite games, but with my buddies flying next to me.
Why is this such an ignored genre and developers continue to churn out ground based FPS?

Maybe there are concerns over how lag etc would affect it, we've all been in MMO zones where there are hundreds of people running about and experienced the lag that comes with it. Although annoying, its not too bad as combat is based on stats etc rather than actually having to manually aim and hit, I guess with several hundred people flying about, issues with lag might cause frustration amongst the players who cant aim and shoot effectively.

Didnt the original Star Wars MMO try this and fail miserably? Also there was a Star Trek MMO.

I have yet to try the Star Trek MMO. I'm thinking more along the lines of single (or maybe double) man cockpit ships. I guess the ultimate would be Death Star type attacks with friends.
Lag may well be the problem, or sheer processing power when people are aiming rather than a set of formulas deciding if you hit or not (like Eve).
Fingers crossed, the upcoming Indie Space shooter does very well and the genre is revitalised.

Black Prophecy is one but it isn't that great, insane amount of bugs when I tried it and after leaving the newbie area it went down hill fast. Eve isn't for me, its more of a empire simulation build up thing.

It is probably the same reason why you don't see any new space shooter games at all carrying on the likes of Freespace etc, there isn't a large enough market or interest for them to bother.

Try x rebirth when it comes out early next year or try the previous x games. Sure they are single player only titles but you might like em.

Also yeah i kinda gave up early with black prophecy but they have had i think about 8 months now since release and they are going to push a expansion out i think soon so maybe its working ok now. Might give it another try myself at the start of the new year.

Firefall
Tribes: Ascension or ascend... (whatever it is)

and Planetside 2.

All in development, all looking great.

I'll give Black Prophecy a go. I avoided it at release as I heard about the bugs etc, but these should be ironed out by now.
I'll try vendetta Online too although it doesn't look as polished as BP. The fact it's just been released on Mobile platforms actually put me off a bit. How deep can it be?

SWG done the space combat reasonably well, eventually. I recall on Chimaera server Sunday night was "Space night" and there was fighters and Yt1300's with full crew compliments.

Wasnt too shabby.

I played BP but found it devoid of any depth and the gameplay too shallow when I wanted something complex like eve but with better flight controls.

Playing BP is like playing a generic single player space flight game...with a chatbox.

Its really nothing special.

The last planet-side and Tribes games looked great too, but they don't exactly have the user base of WoW these days :P

They have their place in the world. I'm not sure if seeing succeed like WoW would benefit either of them.

EvE also has took a turn for the worse because of popularity and 1 deluded CEO.

Firefall and Planetside 2 will cater my ground based FPS needs and I'll definitely be jumping into both. I'll stick with Eve and try Black Prophesy until something better comes along.
Cheers all, fingers crossed for a Star Wars Space combat MMO (not TOR - yawn).

I wonder why Firefly hasn't been made into at least a singleplayer space rpg/shooter if not an MMO. It's universe and aesthetic are ripe for it to be honest, with the whole space cowboy crew out for themselves lending itself perfectly to let each player roam around the system doing any and all jobs they can.

Sigh, wishful thinking :)

As someone above me said, X Rebirth is guaranteed to be an awesome space combat/trading game. They all have been and this looks to have had much of the bad things taken out and the kinks ironed.

i miss SWG :(

Yer I thought Jump to Lightspeed was not a bad attempt really.

I guess longterm there is that Infinity game in development that is worth keeping an eye but like you I am waiting for something along these lines. I think that muppet Smedley said SOE were looking at adding such an expansion to Planetside 2 but after the SWG NGE and CU he is hardly at the top of my Xmas card list and that trusted.
