Koster was a lead for the initial release though and one of the people who made SWG as good as it was along with JTSL. He was not involved with either the CU or the NGE really he was on EQ2 at that point.
I wonder why Firefly hasn't been made into at least a singleplayer space rpg/shooter if not an MMO. It's universe and aesthetic are ripe for it to be honest, with the whole space cowboy crew out for themselves lending itself perfectly to let each player roam around the system doing any and all jobs they can.

No, it didn't fail, it was the best feature of the game and the best expansion pack. The combat was basically X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter style, everyone loved space, it's just it never got any proper additions.
There was a 'Firefly' MMo in production a while back by Multiverse but it never took off !!

Good game, shame it went F2P though. I was really looking forward to it!
they say you can get everything available in their e-shop in game, it just takes longer though.

Would be weird though. A cancelled sci-fi show, with a movie and video game make over. Still, would love to see firefly turned into a space adventure game.
There is nothing stopping a developer created their own ip like that and bandying round the 'inspired by' message. That way they get to keep all the cash and maybe create their own brand/ip that's worth something.
The few firefly episodes that came out didn't make a fully fleshed out IP. And I doubt it would make enough difference in mmo sales to want to pay much for it. Conversely the TV studio owning the ip isn't going to want to rent out the IP for peanuts as they have a chance of diluting/ruining the it.
