why is this laptop running slow?

It's a lenovo idea pad 510.

The hard drive is 1tb WDC hdd 5400rpm.

I downloaded clear disk info, and the all says status OK. 3855 hours of use.
It might say the drive is ok, but I have still had drives with read and write speeds in the region of 5MB/sec pass SMART health checks.

You want a 2.5" SATA3 SSD.

Very simple, looks like you should have a flap on the bottom to access it:

You will need to either do a fresh Windows install or clone your existing install across using either a USB device or a desktop PC.
should have done this ages ago. realised i had a 500gb ssd in my old pc in loft. took it out, 3 minutes later it's in her laptop and working flawlessly.

I was reading a review and the hdd in the 510 is pretty awful:

According to HD Tune and CrystalDiskMark 3.0, the transmission rates in sequential read are abysmal for a modern HDD. When looking at multimedia laptops furnished with a hard drive from the past 10 months, the not very convincing Seagate HDD lags behind the average by roughly 20% also in other laptops. Unfortunately, it looks similar in the 4K read performance which is important for program and OS starts where the head has to collect small, randomly distributed data blocks on the disk. If savings were made on an SSD, at least a somewhat stronger hard drive model could have been selected.

No wonder its better now!
