Why is UT3 unpopular?

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I picked this game up at auction for £10 and I really enjoy it but there never seems to be more than 200 people playing at any one time.

Graphics are good and the game play is very fun but there aren't very many people playing.

Was it just released at a bad time with the likes of Team Fortess 2 and Quake Wars being about or is there something else I'm missing that makes it really unpopular (by comparison)?

I've had it since release day, played it for about 2 hours max since. Don't know why, I just be bothered with it, doesn't hold my interest. Loved UT and UT2004 though:(

I think maybe the spark of the Unreal series is burning out a little. I loved most of the Unreal series religiously but, for some reason, I just wasn't super excited about Unreal Tournament 3.

The problem is that for the fans UT and UT 2003/2004 were spot on, and there's not much you can do to improve the series now other than crank up the eye candy by improving the engine.

I agree that it's basicaly 2004 with a graphics update but I assumed that that would make people flock to it.

Is it just a case of once 2004 gets old enough people will move on to 3? I fired up 2004 about 2 months ago and there still seemed to be lots of pleople playing it.

It sucks 2004 is a lot better.

Care to elaborate? The only thing I can see that's better about 2004 is that some of the maps are bigger.

Not quite right, UT was spot on and UT2004 improve on UT2003 (which stank) but was still not as good as the original.

I enjoyed UT2004 well enough, for a while, but just don't feel they can ever go back to the glory days of the original and best :(

I guess it's because i can't get kills :) but i don't like the changes to the gamemodes i loved assault and onslaught in 2004

The major problem is that they made a near perfect online/offline shooter with the first UT, which they will always struggle to surpass or even match. No amount of shiny graphical goodness will ever repeat the first time you sliced someone with the Ripper while flying through the air on Morpheus :D

I played the original for about a year solid, don’t think I’ve played 2003/2004/UT3 for more than a month combined. It’s time to let it die quietly.

epic spread themselves too thin, GOW and pc/ps3/xbox360 versions of UT3 and midway forced the release due to money problems.

1. ut3 was RTM'ed in beta form.
2. it was consolfied (easy kills), who wants to travel 1/2 the map on hoverboard only to get kill by one stray spam rocket.
3. other more popular fps games were released at the same time.

I think the biggest problem is they released it when a glut of better PC games were released (COD4 & TF2) had they released it now (in the middle of a game drought!) it would have done allot better.

Also The maps seem a little too open to me and need more flash points. It will never be as good as the original the original of anything is nearly always the best. It's still a decent game just overshadowed.

32 person multiplayer game on biohazzard level... can be fun but when ppl vote it for 4 maps in a row it gets a bit old.
but i still love the game :D

I got a bit put off by the fact that the single player campaign was awful in UT3 :(

It's a good game though. I'm a huge Unreal fan, of the engines and the games in general.

UT2004 is still one of my favourite games and it does get played quite a fair bit, even with UT3 being out :)

Thats how i felt about it. I mean, with the huge advertising for other games like COD4, it never got a look in. I love it, its just a shame its multiplayer hasnt taken off like COD4 and TF2 (still a nice number of players though).

Call of Duty 4 can be part of the problem. UT3 is great but it still just UT. Whats the UT3 fan base on the PS3 like? Its still yet to come out on the xbox 360 remember.

I'm with him: the problem isn't that gameplay didn't get better, but it actually got worse. UT is still the biggest hoot and best fun. The irony is that UT originally lost the Q3A v. UT war, but survived longer, and has still spent the last six years trying to be Q3A. In SP mode at least, only Heatray is worth playing in UT3.

I agree, if I want to plau UT I'll go and play the original. I own UT2k4 but have barely played it and theres no chance I'll buy UT3. I tried it and it just seemed worse than the original. I found that the pretty pretty graphics interfered with the gameplay.
