Why is UT3 unpopular?

It seemed they just took everything good about UT2K4 and just chucked it out the window, i used to play 2K4 to death, but i have hardly played more than 3 hours of UT3 after years of waiting with baited breath.
And just after launch it was a HUGE pain to try set up servers, my clan tried to get a couple up (which they did eventually) but ended up running virtual machines etc and having all kinds of trouble with IPs and ports, which really killed it for the larger hosts, hosting more than one server.
To me it just feels like Gears, big and clunky, strange thing is, apparently a lot of people love it on the PS3 either there is something amazing about that version of PS3 owners have low standards (i have a ps3)

I think they suffered a bit from slippage with this, if the game had made it out in early 2007 it might have had a chance to build up critical mass before the holiday seasons behemoths arrived.

UT3 is just so-so gaming with overdone graphics - it's like running around stoned in beer goggles shooting straw manequins. Field of view is even weirder than usual, vaseline smeared soft focus bloom with addition of motion blur is the maps look cartoonishly bizarre. Game lacks clarity and feel of its predecessors.

Another thing, for me, although I admit it might be personal thing - I find myself constantly pressing buttons harder in need to up the pace, as if my character in the game was running in lead shoes through rice field - almost like I couldn't escape the bullet not because of skill, but because snail movements lack agility.

I hate the lot of you.

You are all so wrong

UT is unbeatable...

but then there is the problem isnt it? - youre right !

UT really is unbeatable. It was so perfect, sure, they messed up a tad in 2003 and gave it us back in 2004 but as has been said, the engine can improve eye candy but the gameplay is almost gone.

UT99 had it and 03/04 kind of lost some of that edge.

I think perhaps that had they gone back to their roots, made the game a bit more basic, like the original, and made it look gorgeous, but made the game-play even better then it would have worked... As it is, its just not there... Some things you cant put your finger on, but the game has just lost it for me.

Actually the game lost it before I played it inf truth be known.

I bought and played for the game in October 2005 ( Yup, it was that far back that it was advertised - and as 2007 too! ) but after being knocked back on the release date half a doxen times, I lost the love for it and I moved on. When it finally came, I threw it on and immediately was knocked back by the logging in junk and sure, I loved the improvements... For about 10 minutes.

Even my kids prefer not to play it,and the biggest fun I have ever had is when we hammer hell out of each other on the LAN, but for your 9 / 10 year old kids to say they would rather play Top Trumps instead of UT3, says too much to me.

I suppose its similar to how Doom3 has murdered my love for Quake.

UT4? - No longer interested in them.

Moved over to Dawn Of War now... Cant get off them. Completed SoulStorm with every race on easy and now Im back on insane going through it and I have only Dark Eldar, Orcs and Chaos to complete the game with... In fact, I have got the game completed with each race in only a few hours. Its annoying... But sweet.

I picked up UT3 this week (£12 delivered) and it's not as bad as you would think from the number of people playing it. Epic need to do a fresh demo with a better selection of levels, including a warfare map this time. I do think the main reasons it flopped is the timing of its release and the poor demo. Also doesn't help when Epic come out and say it was released only a third done.

There's plenty of things wrong with it though - not enough game types, not enough maps, maps too small, new vehicles are poor, awful UI (even with 1.2 patch), plus the graphics are far too Gears like with a single colour dominating each level - what happened to the colour of UT/UT2K4 and the sci-fi look? Half of the levels look like they're straight from Gears. Plus it's hard to see players at times. Gameplay has certainly dropped a notch with each iteration of the series too.

... but it's still fun to put on for a blast, and the graphics are spectacular. For all it's faults it deserves a bigger player base.

Not sure if it was mentioned but another big issue is UT3's insistence that you use Gamespy, and its insistence that all user names are unique; this meant that the chances were, unless you had a really unique name in a previous iteration of UT, your chosen name would be taken by someone else already. It also meant that if you changed clans or wanted to occasionally play anonymously on pubs etc, you would be unable to do so.

Basically IMO it is a complete lemon, irredeemably so. It doesn't just need the odd tweak or fix, it needs major surgery to make it any good.

I'm still playing UT2004, there are still loads of full servers and it is streets ahead of UT3. Good maps, sharp clear graphics, not the blurry dark mess you get in UT3. The weapons and movement are better balanced and the weapon effects are better - the shock combo effect in UT3 is appalling compared to the spectacular one in UT2004 for example.

Because it keeps crashing my system every time the round changes!
I had that issue and found a fix that worked for me on the epic forums, here it is-

Here are some options you might try:

Edit the UTEngine.ini which can be found in My Documents\MyGames\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame\Config

For NVIDIA cards:
[Engine.ISVHacks]
UseMinimalNVIDIADriverShaderOptimization=True

For ATI cards:
[Engine.ISVHacks]
DisableATITextureFilterOptimizationChecks=False

...and then...

[Engine.ISVHacks]
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=True
PumpWindowMessagesWhenRenderThreadStalled=True

[SystemSettings]
OnlyStreamInTextures=True

Let us know if that works.

I laughed when I read that. That couldn't be further from the truth, and its quite obviously just his opinion.

I believe the problem with UT3 is that, theres nothing wrong with it, its just no longer revolutionary, like UT99 was. UT99 was new for its time. UT3 isnt new for its time. People have played UT for years now. It doesnt hold your interest like the original did. Thats it really. That and the odd bugs in the game.

I loved Onslaught in UT2004 and spent many, many hours playing it. I tried playing UT3 for 20 mins or so a while back, but it just wasn't the same. The graphics weren't sharp at all and it was harder to tell friend from foe. I should get round to reinstalling it and give it another go really.

It also meant that if you changed clans or wanted to occasionally play anonymously on pubs etc, you would be unable to do so.

There is a field specifically for the clan name which you can change at any time that goes onto the beginning of your name. You can also have multiple accounts for playing anonymously.

UT3 is much more fun than 2k4 imo and warfare is probably the best multiplayer fps gametype I've ever played. I haven't played ut99 however.

I bought the special edition and I played for a whopping hour long or so. I really liked vehicle CTF on the demo but the community generally feels 'dead' atm. Might give it a whirl sometime

it got delayed to much then came out when TF2, quake wars and cod4 had the market share

pretty sure i remember seeing somewhere it had sold a million on pc and ps3 thoso it hasent done to badly

I feel the same way, they need to go back to a more stripped down, focussed game. Stop trying to please everyone by throwing in vehicles and too many inconsequential game types and give us a sequel worthy of the original UT.

I have played UT3 for about 3 hours all together, there are other games that are just so much more fun and as someone else said, don't require much effort.

how about we stop saying how its a shame its unpopular. Instead, reinstall and play

.....just a thought :p
couldnt agree more :) everyone buy it/reinstall it and lets have a hugeee gaming session :D hehe could get ocuk involved and see if they hold a tournament with prizes :) say £1 entry....
... but again saying that, the grand prize might only be 3£ if the idea flopped :p hehe

yea i didnt see the point of adding vehicles, it just makes it annoying imo, all they need is DM TDM CTF and 1v1.
graphics are sexy, very sexy :D but yes the character does feel rather sluggish speed wise, all that tech u though they could have made running legs :p hehe

but anyways again... come on everyone give it another go :D
