Why - "Is 'x' amount of VRAM enough" seems like a small problem in the long term for most gamers

i know that, i just mock the general hivemind across forums where people think they have a superior experience with %20-30 higher lows when in reality consoles have the most tightest possible %1 lows due to how close their APIs are to the metal :)

the whole discussion began with a person mocking the 45 being "already not great" for %0.1 lows

The main thing is you are never going to notice that 0.1% dip until you turn on an FPS monitor / graph.

I agree completely (I can barely perceive 0.1% low dips). But, in the case of Watch Dogs: Legion, the 1% lows were 35 with an RTX 3070 with 8GB of VRAM and 50 FPS with a modified version with 16GB of VRAM. There's also problems with freezing and stuttering, which is the main problem as it completely interrupts gameplay.

With only a little more optimization, they could reduce the VRAM required for this game. In 2021, very few have a GPU with more than 8GB of VRAM, so perhaps the developers will.

Another problem with this is going up to the 3080 and then the 3080 Ti is only 2 Gb more Vram for each. That doesn't seem like very much to prevent these spikes due to running out of Vram.

Its completely daft how they put 12 Gb on the 3060, but won't double up the vram on the 3070 or 3080.

Also with the example of the game you gave, in most such cases its due to poor optimization like you pointed out. Would it really be worth getting a 3090 just for one or a few games that would have such a problem?

I still keep looking at the 3080 page and trying to get one, even though I know I'd be better of skipping this gen too until the RTX 4000. The thing is if I do manage to get one, I might be able to sell my 1080 Ti for a considerable amount too.
