Why join the army

My brother is in the Royal Irish, and he doesn't support the war, but he did and does his duty, not because he's told to - they offered to 'let him go', but he didnt want to let his brothers go in alone, without his help.

I don't agree with the 'war' but lets face it, not many people do agree with war.

The point I think should be taken into consideration is that, our brothers, fathers, mothers and daughters are over there now, we have to support them, let them know they are respected and appreciated.

He's at home now, and the stories he tells me are all great, not a bad word about his CO or his team mates, says the English NCO's and CO's are pricks - full of themselves, but they're not that bad at their job. Loves the Aussie & Scot CO's, food is good (even the rations, but they make you constipated for 3 days at a time).

The media just highlights the bad points and pushes them until you think they're useless and unprofessional, which is completely untrue.

There's nothing wrong with English NCOs and SNCOs - I think he's wrong there. However, I would agree with him as far as English Officers are concerned. Sandhurst is the last bastion of the British Upper Class.

my best mate was in the Signals..and bought himself out at 14 years to get married..now divorced he is gutted he ever left and is too old to get back in..biggest regret of his life..he was a sergeant and misses every one of his section.

I dont think anybody who hasnt been in the army will know how much of a friend you mates become when they will be willing to die to help you and you for them

Because you get to shoot guns & kill people legally, what better reason is there.
Also the possibility of slinging a few mortars about, driving tanks, APCs etc
If your good enouth you can then go on to spec ops & some covert ops. Plenty of travel thrown is as well and a bunch of mates that would die for you.

No-one joins the Army to shoot guns and kill people, those that manage to get in usually do not last long. People join for a secure job, great travel and adventure training, to learn new skills, the opportunity to make a difference in different locations around the world, to push themselves to the limit and learn who they really are and what they're capable of, and finally to make great friends and life a good life.

I've probably missed a few things there, but hopefully my point is made. Combat is incredibly noisy, confusing and terrifying - anyone that joins to do that is retarded IMHO. It's something you do because you have to, it's not something to look forward to.

Its not a simple of choice of join the army see the world.

There are some trades where you will be lucky to get back to england for a tour, and there are others that you will never leave england for a tour, and then there is the inbetween trades that have you all over the place, the majority are those inbetween trades, where you will spend most of your time in either UK or Germany.

Pick your trade wisely, and do not be forced to pick a trade you do not want to do, even the recruiting teams have targets to meet, and there are some trades that need bodies, and some that dont.

Me if i was a young un' again, i would join up in a heatbeat. One of my lads wants to join the army, and my other the RAF :( Each to their own.

This opinon wont get you anywhere in the army and in fact if you were to make that known while you were there it would probably get beaten out of you. The second part is true i guess though :).

Never shot anyone yet mate! You'll find that very few of us in the Army actually do this (% wise that is). However, as a long range sniper I've probably bagged a couple somewhere down the line ;)

theres no end of reasons to join

Smashing up Aldershot pubs with impunity, a very real risked of getting killed (WITH NO RESPAWNS! LOLZ), ending up homeless when you leave....

Its great.

'Great country' - *smacks you round face with keyboard*

Join, make the chainsaw rifle possible in combat and then I will worship you.

Absolutley. There are many many jobs more dangerous. But most of them are well paid to reflect this

In the army, OTOH, its considered acceptable to pay peanuts. And we all know what that gets you......

You seem to know a lot about serving members of our military. I'm interested, how many servicemen do you know personally? What is their IQ level? How long have you known them? Or are you just founding your opinion on Daily Mai lcarp again?

For many years I worked as a civillian contractor on Army, Navy and Airforce bases. It was an eye opener. There are some very intelligent members of the armed services, and there are also many who are only a few steps away from being the missing link.

So you have just described pretty much any workplace in Britain. Here, have a merit *

I get paid at least £10k more than my mate who's Head of IT for a well know private school so I'll quite happily take the peanuts! Anyway, it's only the grunts who have long arms and bruised knuckles (allegedly) :)

Quite fancied the army when I was younger but as I got older I saw through it all and realised the realities of modern conflict.

I still have respect for the discipline and understand why people would feel proud to protect their country. But for me looking at the political tool the army has become I could never believe the job I was doing was an honourable one.

As far as the "seeing the world" argument goes it no longer holds water, 20 years ago maybe but not any more. Cheap travel means I can go wherever I want when I want with who I want. Hopefully the foreign people I meet at the other end will be my friend not my enemy.
