presumably not the demand any more, and the costs of doing small runs of 5,400rpm drives would be higher than just switching to only making 7,200rpm drives
It's the same reason a 40gb (£35) drive is only a few pounds cheaper than a 160gb drive (£45), the "lesser" drive is barely any cheaper to make/distribute.
Not many do but Samsung still make a 160gb IDE drive that is 5400rpm it appears. If you want a SATA drive though I think you can only get 7200rpm, even although they may cost slightly more I'd probably still go for a 7200rpm drive.
