Hello guys, another forum i'm arguing with a guy about building new computer, i'm saying that lga775 socket is dead and there is no need to put any money in that system, of course q9550 is still very nice CPU compared to i7 920 or i5 750... But is it still good idea to buy "dead socket"? when for the same money you can buy either i5 750 or q9550 :/
I think it's dead socket without feature...
So what's yours opinion about this all thing?

I upgraded to a Q9550, its a good chip and was reasonably easy to get to 3.7Ghz on an old board.

If i was building from new id go i5/7 though, i could do with a new mobo but there's no point in buying 775 one. So the next upgrade will be i5/7

Socket 775 is dead in exactly the same sense that 1156 and 1336 are. It's a daft argument unless the user is likely to upgrade the processor without wanting a new motherboard and ram. Even if they are likely to do this, amd have a strong record of backwards compatibility and intel have a pretty poor one.

Unless your friend really wants 12gb of ram or hyperthreading there's very little reason to go with x58 over P45. For some reason you don't think it's worth mentioning what he wants to use the computer for, so we can't say which system is better for him.

My honest opinion is that you're trolling, having noticed that your irrational stance irritated people on another forum you thought you'd try here.

As above, s775 offers brilliant performance for the money, you can put a decent c2d system togerther for very little money.
I cant see myself upgrading to a new socket for another year a least.

thing is theyre not as cost effective since that processors like 150-160 compared to the superior i5/i7 and the mobos are harder to find and generally more expensive, the only good thing bout the 775 sockets is the ddr2 but then again ddr3 is better.

Except for the fact that you can get a core i5 750 and compatible mainboard for a similar price, if not a little bit cheaper than a Q9550 and a decent p45 board nowadays.

If you're starting a new build then you'd have to be a bit daft to even consider 775 stuff now.

A Q9550 should only be considered if you've already got a 775 board, and you're upgrading from a dual core.

Yes, if the P55 chipset + 4gb ddr3 + i5 750 comes out cheaper than P45 + 4gb ddr2 + q9550 then still take the cheaper one. There are power saving arguments in favour of the newer chip iirc.

For some reason I read the OP as "why is noenone suggesting a q9550 as an upgrade to a dual core on 775". My bad

This. It's madness to build a new 775 rig now. However, the Q9550 is a good upgrade if you already have a 775 rig.

Q9550 if you already have a LAG775 system

tehy are good chips as you can see I have one, it eats all my games why should I upgrade?

its just that i3/5/7 are the LGA775s replacments, and I think LGA 775 is due to be EOL this year

on that site guy askedto build him a gaming rig, with his budget we came with idea to get amd 620 and amd 5850 gpu, the guy asked if we could build him alternative system from intel and then i said that amd ATM is best option for his budget, and getting 775 is nonsence. and there other guy started to talk BS that q9550 is much more better option, i do agree with that, but basicaly his budget wasn't big enought to afford that q9550, or he would be supposed to drop 5850 and get cheaper one, that way he would loose all his gaming power...
anyway thanks for your answers :) and i do agree if you have 775 thereis no need to go i7 or i5 just yet...
