Why not be a power ranger ?

i'll never be a power ranger!

(admittedly i do ride a bike)

but dread to think how much of a tit i'd look in a dayglo leather jumpsuit on the back of a Harley :D

trying to work out what to get as a second bike, needs to be something I dont mind leaving on the street as it'll be a commuting bike, but also something that is fun enough and different to the Vrod

I would like to learn how to ride a bike properly. I was close to learning and buying a bike but the pros outweighed the cons for me. I would never use it to commute, only for fun.
A friend of mine at work races 1000cc bikes (cant remember the class, but it was on an Aprillia). He won his season and is a very good rider, but doesnt ride bikes on the road, just on the track. I would consider something like this, but need to learn first!

800 miles on a sv? rofl it must have been bald when you got it or you sat in yer driveway doing donuts .. Sorry but it never happened :P

I get 4k out of 2ct's with more than double the power and it only gets ridden hard .

And Wiksta i went down that route of selling my bikes and getting a Westfield. It was fun no doubt and scared a lot of fast cars and upset some bikes in the twisties...But at the end of the day it wasnt a bike .. Kept for about 2 years and went back to bikes and glad i did .

I am desperate to get a bike.

However, some places have quoted nearly £800 for CBT, Theory and DAS. Plus add £500+ for either leathers/textiles and helmet, then £2-3K for the bike and another £6-700 for insurance?!

just cant afford it

:(

I'd want an FZ6 for my first bike to get a years NCB then maybe onto a sportier bike. Although I'd love one of these:

One option I have thought of is to get an older 600 and strip it down and make it look how I want but tbh it would probably cost me more!:(

I've seen more dead bikers than I care to recall. :(

Very dangerous by definition, you crash, be it your fault or not, and at best its going to hurt in a big way.....

Not to mention other hazzards such as Diesel spills (no! I don't brim my tanks!)

I've never personally had the Balls to become a biker, having knocked about with an MC a few years ago, I quickly learned that if I wanted to join the "Ex members" travelling around on 2 wheels was a good way to do it! - RIP Gonz. :(

You must be mental :D

Were all mental for going out on the roads mixing it with Cars, Vans & HGV's

If 2 wheels are for you, go for it but I hope luck is on your side as often for a biker, thats what it comes down too.

For those worried about it being unsafe, I disagree - like driving a car, it's only as unsafe as the person operating it. I highly recommend reading the Motorcycle Roadcraft book (ISBN 978-0113411436) or the driver's equivalent (978-0117021686) - the roads would be so much safer if everyone followed the guidelines in these books, and they ought to be part of the driving/riding test. For the record, I've been driving for 8 years and riding for 4, and haven't had a single accident.

For the record I've been driving since '89, professionally since around 1993, I've probably had 1 major and 1 minor accident in that time yet I have seen probably over a hundred, the vast majority involving bikers.

Its not just about you, theres always the other guy.....

And how many of these 'other guys' were following the advanced riding practices in that (or any other) book? The point I'm trying to make is that the current bike test, much like the current car test, is wholly inadequate for safe motoring, but further training can reduce the risk substantially. I wasn't bragging about experience, quite the opposite - statistically I should be an extremely high risk rider i.e. young male with relatively little experience, yet my record so far shows otherwise which I would mainly put down to following the aforementioned advanced techniques.

I agree, but the point is R420 is making is that in a collision between a rider with good roadcraft and a car with poor one (or the other way around) 99% of the time the rider is going to come off worst.

True, and I know for sure that it's no consolation knowing you were in the right if you still end up dead or seriously injured. Yet the whole point of advanced riding is to avoid said collisions through good awareness, control, decision-making and prediction of hazards. I'll concede that it's no perfect system, there's no such thing, but as long as you recognize any 'near-misses', regardless of who's at fault, and think about what you could have done to avoid it, you'll become a much safer rider.

Id ride a bike but i dont have the most fantastic physicue to say the least so i would look daft in the power ranger costumes.

You don't have to wear tight leathers, synthetics are much more baggy / padded and once you got some armour in there as well it would be fine.

My leathers are about 6 years old, really cheap rubbish and gone all saggy / baggy... Gotta buy some new ones soon though as they would be a liability in a accident.

Does anyone know how much they are charging for CBT->DAS now.

Found a place local to me called rjh. A 5 day DAS course inc CBT is £579 and excludes the theory and practical test fees. Not sure if it includes the theory or if you have to take it before you go.

Seems to be the cheapest so far!

Also, aren't the test changing at the end of the month? Can anyone give a quick overview of the new changes and how it would effect me (I am 28 if that is important)

Sold my bike last year, got to the point where i could no longer trust myself and would have been in danger of becoming another statistic on the roads around the lune valley.
When you arrive at your destination and cant remember much of how you got there since all you were seeing was the road ahead of the bike its time to put the toy away and re-evaluate things, that and my 2 children are what did it for me. Plus living in an area with a very high bike using population and very high profile policing of bikers made going out less fun each time.

Used to commute by bike for over 5 years day in, day out. Winter was fun!!

It does make you more aware of whats going on around you though, still do life savers when im driving the car, second nature to look over my shoulder in the car when im on roundabouts.

Always used to want one, until I lost my best mate (RIP Rich) 2 years ago from a bike accident. It wasn't even another 'road user' that caught him out either, it was a drunk woman stumbling into a dual carriageway...

As others have said, you can be the best, safest rider in the world but if you're out of luck one day....that's it. Game over.

No interest at all anymore - even though my Dad is a biker.

Biking is awsome :D..........car drivers are not

I got hit by a woman driving and talking on her phone about 4 years ago. It really hurt but I was lucky not to be seriously injured. Strangley, I'd had a couple of near misses, that had made me start to think twice about riding on the road, just before that happened.

Now I just stick to riding on race tracks. That way if I hurt myself it's most likely to be my own fault and I think that's easier to live with. Also, it's so much more fun than riding on the road for lots of different reasons. I haven't for a while as I sold my last bike and haven't decided what to get next but believe me I will be riding again soon!

I'm planning on getting a bike, the route I'm planning on doing is:

CBT & Theory out of the way
Buying a new 125 which comes with subsidised insurance for a year
Pottering around on the 125 for a while, learning to ride and seeing if I actually enjoy it
Couple of lessons on a bigger bike
Practical test on bigger bike
Sell 125
Buy bigger bike

Yup, makes much more sense than my :

Do CBT - Love it!
Book DAS lessons
Find out there are no theory slots till April
Have to do a weekend DAS training (This weekend, cant wait :D ), then wait 2 weeks, do the theory, then book a test, and try and get more DAS training near the test.....
