My dog's always in the car and I've been quite lucky as he has only ever been sick in a car once after drinking too much sea-water and it was my GF's car anyway

My mate Alan who drives a Taxi has had a very similar incident to the one in the OP but it was a very drunk guy, not a dog....He was not very happy after that fare I can tell you.
