Why PayPal?

Not for the first time, someone has asked for payment via PayPal only, and refused a Bank Transfer.

I don't understand why PayPal is better?

From my point of view, I refuse to link my bank account with my PayPal because I don't want to pre-authorise PP to take money from my bank account. I only use PP when it's free for me, or offers some benefit, such as eBay purchases.

People tell me PayPal gifting is free - it isn't for those of us who haven't linked our bank account with it. If you use a card to make PP gifts, they take 3.4% + 20p.

But I guess my real question is, why do people not want to accept Bank Transfer? It's free for both parties, and the risk (what risk?) from giving out your bank account + sort code, is not greater than when you would have to have written a cheque (remember those?)

So enlighten me, what is the point of refusing Bank Transfer for PayPal?

Aside from that not being true, if you are the seller, that's a good thing, surely?

I am the buyer, btw.

It is true though unless there is clear evidence of it being fraudulent. But if a seller is refusing it then maybe he doesn't want to give his bank details out even though it's pretty harmless, or he wants records of the transaction via paypal.

Because it's just so easy to scam you using Paypal. A trained chimp could do it. But with bank transfer it's significantly more difficult.

I'd rather use bank transfer every time... but then I've never had anyone ask to use paypal other than through ebay, which I'm fine with.

If you look around the MM here, a significant % want PayPal only.

@arknor: the items is extremely low value, and I don't want it enough to bother. a game for £4 this time :p

but hes the buyer.

So? You take the money, transfer it back to your bank and don't send the item. Then you disappear. Paypal won't want to take the hit so will crap all over the OP instead.

Seen it happen first hand.

The only time I use paypal is when it's convenient, eg, with a site you don't know too well and don't want to make an account with, PayPal is epic with that.

For me, setting up a bank transfer is a PITA with the secure key nonsense and if I have paypal money, I'll often use it.

However, that being said, I still don't understand those who refuse to take BT. I'm totally fine with them saying one is preferred, but my mind is befuddled when ONLY paypal is accepted. Anyway, as MM rules say, it's the Seller's decision as to who they sell to ;)

NoChex! Does anyone still use this? That's a blast from the MM past. Bank transfer all the way for me though. PayPal fees are enough to put me off.

I assume sometimes it comes down to wanting to keep your bank details anonymous. Specially if you're dealing with someone you don't know online.

Paypal is just arse. I dont understand why anyone would use it on the MM either (as a seller at least), additional fees, more faffing around to actually get the money into your bank and increased risk.

Bank transfer BOSH look there is my money, I can spend it instantly with no fuss.

I bet the op is buying something from a forum and not inside ebay so paypal wont do anything anyway.......

Paypal are a bunch of crooks for selling. The fact eBay own them and profit from both seller fees and then charge for receiving money needs to be looked into. As I say... crooks.
