Why select a Gigabyte DS4 over a DSR3..?

Hello

I have just upgraded my Father in Laws PC with a DSR3 motherboard. I liked the board and my only niggle was that the external SATA backplate was a little wasted, for him anyway, and a USB one would have been more useful.
The position of the IDE socket at the bottom of the board was a little strange but as he had all SATA then that wasn't a problem. I can't imagine him ever using all eight SATA ports that the board has...!!!

Apart from the DSR3 being able to accommodate both DDR2 and DDR3 are there any other advantages to having one board over the other, apart from the £20 or so difference in cost....?

I am looking for another P35 board and I can't decide on whether to just get another DSR3 or something else...?

I got the ds4, and it's pretty good. It comes with the cables, power connector and external sata II package in kit form, which I ain't fitted.
I wasn't bothered about ddr 3 as ddr2 is much cheaper.

The only problem I did have was the lan drivers for the board acted up, it would only allow half speed on my broadband. I updated the drivers and now it's spot on.

Cooling wise, and o/c the board is very good, and I do think overall it's the better board of the two.

It does come with another 2 external usb thingie

Thanks to those that explained some of the differences between the boards, my thoughts are....

I *might* be tempted to wait and see what the x38 chipset has to offer (by that time the next tier of board makers, like DFI, will have their P35 ones on the market) and the Q6600 G0 will have been on the around long enough to see just how toasty it is...!!!

However the person that I'm building one up for might decide to go for the cheaper Gigabyte board over the DS4, I might be able to convince him to buy an e2160 and just clock it to over 3 Ghz

As I'm not that desperate, for my 'upgrade', I can only benefit from waiting a little :)

DS3R and an e2160 is an excellent combination for the money.

I know that because of the VERY informative thread tht you posted showing just what is possible with such a chip :)

They do seem to be a no brainer in terms of superb VFM and performance.

The DS3P is a better choice than the DS4. It's the same thing without the heatpipes.
