Will it make me a better gamer? More frags? Yeah baby!

No serious. My old packard bell mouse has bit the dust and I'm mulling over getting a gaming mouse.

I've seen the Logitech MX400 at my local PC store for £25. Is this one any good?

Whats all this scalable DPI all about? Do I need it (MX400 hasn't got it I think).

Are they worth it then? Can anyone recommend one?

yes yes yes, i used to have some crappy Microsoft wireless intellimouse... i got sick of that, and went to a Logitech G5, and trust me im GLAD I DID.

they make a LOT of difference, from the greater accuracy with DPI, the smoother movements, to the much faster response !

im not sure whether optical or laser is best, many people have different opinions, personally i like laser, but my only downside is that i cant use a mousemat really :(

but yeh its DEFFO worth it ! :)

you updated the firmware? check logitech site, i found this with my G5 was wierd on a mousemat, now its fine though since doing that.

and yes a gaming mouse is better imo, one thing i like about most gaming mice is you can adjust the dpi some people prefer a high dpi myself i set mine to 800dpi :) just all personal preference and what kind of sens you are using too :)

have you changed your usb pooling rate yet? when i set mine to 1000hz i found the sensitivity went down but it was far more accurate, so i leave mine on 1600dpi most of the time now (mx518)

Microsoft HABU / Razer Diamondback.

I'm sure someone will say MX518 but they're too big and clunky rly.

most logitech mice are bigger than razer etc, but again i reckon its all down to personal pref. i much prefer logitech mice due to the larger size :)

I agree, Logitech mice f t w, some find them too big, depends if you aim with your wrist or your fingers (in terms of how you hold the mouse)

MX518 > G5.

Optical IS better than Lazer, however that's only because Lazer is at a stage where it's not being utilized fully, so I totaly suggest that you avoid lazer entirely for the time being.

I was thinking about the Logitech MX400 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=KB-084-LG&groupid=702&catid=23&subcat=3) as I'm on a budget really. Looks like it hasn't got scalable DPI and is laser.

There is a G5 on the high street near me for £45. But I've heard the button below the mouse wheel can be easily nudged during gaming.

So optical is better than laser then?

cant say ive ever nudged the dpi buttons during a game unless doing it on purpose i usually knock it up a touch when using a awp in css

I've had an intellimouse 4, razer diamondback and razer copperhead.

The microsoft mouse was ok but my upgrade to a blue plasma copperhead was a massive one and signalled a move from optical to laser. It was faster, more accurate and a lot smoother!

Next came the move from the copperhead to diamondback. It was done from a purely aesthetic and financial standpoint. I wanted a red mouse to go with my pc's theme at the time and i couldn't afford another copperhead so i sold mine and bought a red diamondback. This was a move back to optical and from 2000dpi down to 1600dpi

I assumed it would be a downgrade but i find the diamondback even easier to control and very very accurate!

I also have a friend with a deathadder. Looks like a habu but is optical not laser and is 1800dpi rather than 2000dpi. This was not an accident as razer realised optical was still the performance leader regardless of resolution!

It is an expensive but amazing mouse. Not worth the extra over the diamondback in my mind but still... if you have to have the best then the deathadder is it! :)

To sumarise - get a decent gaming optical.

Never had a problem with my MX700 and my allsop mat?
Laser mice works on glass lol so using a mat is not/should not make a difference

Razer if you're a leftie freak or have girl hands... logitech otherwise :D

I have the MX510, excellent mouse however I have heard very good things about the deathadder and it does look very good.
